Fuel delivery issue?

so, I have my 1980 280zx, and there is a problem starting it when cold. It not start unless we pump the accelerator, and when it does start it will not hold idle unless we hold it at about 1000 RPM. Once it is warm, it idles fine and starts fine.

I think we have part of this problem figured out. My vacuum tubes are pretty worn out, so we plan on replacing those, idle air regulator is getting replaced in a while, and we know the cold start valve is suspect if those don't help.

There is, however, one symptom that confuses me a bit, and I'm not sure if it's normal or a sign that something else is broken. Whenever we shut off the car after running it for a while, you can hear gas glugging out of the front and in to the gas tank, like the gas lines are draining back out. Anyone seen this or know what could be causing it?

Thanks!

There is a return line to the gas tanks so I'm assuming gas coming back would be normal although I haven't listened myself. The pump primes the system if you turn the car to the on position without starting......

Oh, that makes sense! Thanks.

I'm pretty sure that based on other threads I've read here and in manuals and such that we've figured out a good troubleshooting process for the rest of the start issue, I just really wasn't sure about the gas gurgling back to the tank.

sounds like the auxiliary air regulator, it opens to allow extra air into the manifold during cold start up. With a broken one that is stuck shut, it won't idle on its own til it warms up. I have a used but good working order one that i can ship to you for $25 total. E-mail me if interested (sk84life1122@sbcglobal.net)
