Fuel pump issue :( Project on hold
Well got the good motor into the good bodied car did the drum roll and just cranks. After 4 hours of checking wires fuses and relays im lost. Fuel pump is not working.
All my relays "click" with the ignition in the on position and the middle relay socket.
I changed the pump useing the donors that was in daily driver use 3 weeks ago.
I turn to the on position it fires up for a bout 3 seconds at a very low speed "of course the fuel line is disconnected"
Now where is the pump every singal efi car i had a pump in the tank what is that hunk of what looks like a coil with wires hanging from the under side of the tank??
Is the pump located inside the tank or is that mearly a sending unit? It seems this has come up several times in the message boards.
And all seem to have the same opening " Car sat for years" "car was in storage" "its a 79 with 34,000 mi" Whats going on is it wireing or the pumps them selves
I did not change that coil looking thing yet Im sure that wount work got a migraine and grabbing at straws as I rip the interior out further.

The device that is just above your tank, which sets in it, and has wires, and hoses to it. Is your fuel sending unit. The thing on the right side of your tank, that is supposed to hum for a few seconds when you turn the key. Is your fuel pump. You have relays underneath your hood. A black box on the passenger side, closest to the front of the car. And you have another one underneath the passenger side of the dash. Also your cutoff plug. Is located in the rear cargo area, underneath the mat and carpet. It is 2 white plugs, that connect to each other. Hope that helps.

You have no idea lol like I said I thought that was just a sending unit.
What I didnt under stand was why have 4 wires in the harness whan just two are needed for a fuel gauge
and my testing method was laying the sending unit on the trunk floor and turning the key couldnt tell where the hum was comeing from.
God i feel like an idiot!!! ok Im going to change out the fuel pump should work its getting juice you can hear it. Like a dieing box fan gets a few rotations but dies.

Wait - the fuel pump is only supposed to be that noisy for a few seconds? Mine whines pretty loudly all the time, I figured it was just a symptom of being an external pump vs. in-tank. Plus I don't have much interior in right now, so everything's noisier than it should be.

I finally caught an intermission in the local leaf blower symphony so I could get some clearer videos.
First video is from outside the car, about 8 feet away. I toggle the key from 'on' to 'acc' once, it's not shutting off on it's own. As far as I know, it will buzz like that indefinitely as long as I leave the key in 'on'. Mic doesn't pick it up as loud as it seems in person - it's the humming at a pitch of F#.

Second video is from sitting in the drivers seat, windows up. It's covered up some from the engine/exhaust noise, but when I start the car pitch raises to a G#.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9VnlgbMI1s
Again, the rear trim is missing, so it's probably a little louder inside because of that.
So any thoughts? Should I be worried about the pump dying on me in the near future? Or just normal noise as a result of an external pump?
Oh, and Lesnocker - sorry for the thead hijack here.

No problem as I said feel a lil stupid fighting for two days then I cut the metal lines off the 80 figureing the 81 had the exact sending unit nope One got a plastic box in the bottom of the tank one has a 45' 3 1/2 inch plastic tube. So I got creative rather than switching gas tanks. But hooked up the donor cars pump shot a solid stream of gas 3 ft hitting the wife so yea pump works!
