funny... wondering if this is normal?

I was messing with my wife the other day, just joking and while my Z was running I pulled the key out of the ignition. The car keeps running, and will stay running (even driving) until you put the key back in and turn the switch back. I've never driven anything 26 years old before, so maybe that isnt as funny as I found it at the time...? bad thing is, any key (or anything long and key shaped) will start the car! I guess the previous owner had it rigged up that way..

unfortunatly thats a common problem with most cars over 20 years old.. the tumblers in the ignition are pretty worn out and most keys that are shapes the same will start your car... vyou can always change your igniton switch to a new one and also have all your locks changed as well.. i thiunk MSA sells the whole kit...

I think he was talking about how you can remove the key from the ignition while it's turned to the 'run' position.

Since the switch makes contact while rotated, as long as it's in the same position, it doesn't matter if the key is in it or not.

Both my previous '80 and '82 were this way as well. I had a 'friend' riding with me that thought it would be funny to pull my keys out of the ignition and toss them out the window while we were driving one day.

After two hours of searching for the tossed keys and even he didn't think it was funny anymore, especially since I made him buy the next tank of gas and threatened to leave him on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere unless he found them.

It does it in my '81 always has. But you can't stick any key to start it. So I think it is a common thing with the ZX's I mean it is kind of nice to start it up, lock the car, and go back into the house, while it is warming up. unlock the door put the key back into the ignition. And away we go!!

I thought you would get a kick out of that. I just never thought to change it, because of the convenience.

Exactly! Who wants to start your car to let it warm up and leave the keys in it out on the street just asking for someone to drive it away!

Start it, pull the key, lock the doors, go inside and get your shiite together. Come back in a few minutes with a high probability that the car will still be there with a nice toasty interior...

That WOULD be cool, if my heater core wasn't shot. luckily, since I'm in Arizona, it works good for the A/C in the summer...
