Given an '81 zx... Rusty. Impressions? (pics)
HELLO!
So yeah, my brothers gone to live elsewhere and given up his car, so I'm going to claim it. It's been sitting more or less 2 years or so. undercover mostly only recently
It'll be my first car. pysched to get into it and ****. reading heaps.
Anyways, it's got a few serious rusty spots, but doesn't look like it's spread too far. under the rear left window I managed to poke a hole pretty easily... Rear left above tail light looks bad too.
I'm really keen to get the body sorted first thing
AND
Engine wise, it wont turn on. Windows and healights work, but try to start makes a click and then a long buzz...
Whatchoo reckon?
thanks

Welcome to ZDriver!
That rust isn't too bad (I've seen a lot worse). Looks like some spots have rusted through, but at least it's not an entire panel missing. I suggest leaving it alone unless you want to do some major work.
As for the motor not starting, check your electrical connections at the battery & starter for corrosion. Also, a "click - click" sound when you try to start is usually a stuck solenoid on the starter. Give it a good tap w/ a hammer & try it again.
Where are you from? I notice it's a RHD...

Welcome to Zdriver
I got a car that was sitting for 2 years also and this is the best site to get help on, NismoPick is the correct, chk all the connections. It would not be a bad idea to also get some tune up done and an oil change. My cars oil was pretty crappy when I checked after getting it.
Whats with the duct tape on the hood???
Cheers !

Well the thing is I AM wanting to do some major body work. I don't need the datsun up and running within any particular timeframe, so taking care of the body seems like the first logical step.
what would you guys suggest? I don't even want to salvage that colour. I'd rather drop some cash (that would otherwise have been spent on buying a second hand car) into getting the body professionally done.
I dunno I feel like I could take care of the rusty spots by hand, but some can be poked through with a screwdriver (some with a finger).
And even if I did take care of the rusty spots, heaps of the panels have dings or are wonky etc and need to be pro-beaten back into the right shape and everything.
I was thinking paying to get it soda blasted, beaten, welded, primed and painted. Or is there much of that a smart guy (just without any car experience) like me could do himself?
thanks
p.s I'm from Sydney, AU. And Njgheewala, the duct tape is coz that vent has cracked I think.

Wow....it's my Z's twin on the other side of the world! lol Same color, 2 seater, and T-tops. Crazy...anyway welcome to Zdriver. And good luck with your new project. Looks to be in great shape, minus the rust. And I am sure with some friendly help and tips on here. You can get that Z started. Keep us posted.
