Giving my ZX a bit more kick

Well it's beginning to get colder and I'm gonna be storing my Z soon. Luckily for me my Uncle has a giant garage that he said I could store my car in during the winter. Anyway over the winter I plan to finish up and upgrade my stereo system, fix up the rip in the driver's seat and maybe just do a little bit of interior updating. I'm saving on the side to eventually pick up a Turbo ZX, but I thought maybe I could put some money to give my current Z some more kick. I'm thinking of eventually turboing and 5-speeding it, but for the time being I'm looking for something to do that'll just give the engine a little bit better acceleration etc for not a huge amount of money.

So far I'm looking into a good Cold Air Intake and Upgraded Exhaust. I'm wondering what else you guys would say. Nothing major at least, just some things that will give the car a bit more go, and something noticeable that I will feel.

like you said, exhaust and a cold air intake
i just got flowmasters on my 86 and i felt a difference and it sounds alot better

Umm, you could probably go with some headers or a new chip maybe but those may be a little expensive compared to exhaust/cold air.

Does no one read any of the ECU tech posts??? You can't "chip" a 280zx ecu... nor a Z31 ECU for that matter. You have to upgrade the entire ecu, which = NOT CHEAP.

Nismo: you took nearly EIGHT minutes to come up with those links dude... I think you're loosing your edge.

86zMan: get a haircut you darn hippie!

duowing: if you don't care too much about gas mileage, you could upgrade to a 4.11 R200 rear-end from a turbo 200SX. That'll make a bigger difference than either the cold air intake or the headers.

The CAI won't do much but make your throttle response a little better and the header will improve things very minimally. Even these two together won't make much of a difference, but it'll be louder and make you feel like it's more powerful.

Option 1. CAI, 60mm TB, cam, port n polish head, valve job, header, mandrel bent exhaust and good muffler all together will make a very nice improvment but move your power band up pretty high in the rpm band. Any of these individually will have minimal results and some, by themselves, can actually make your car slower!

Option 2. 4.11 rear end from turbo 200sx will do pretty much the same thing for your acceleration with a lot less hassle and $$. You'll loose gas mileage and top end though so you'll have to weigh that against what you want to get out of it.

Good luck!

For your Option 1 set of upgrades, about how much might all that cost?

L-Dub, what mods can I do to a 1995 Honda to get a bit more kick out of it? I want to be able to beat my friend's Z.
