I've got an '83ZX as well. The Haynes maunal has been a good friend to me. You sometimes have to decipher what it is that they're talking about...But for the most part, if I can't figure it out with the Haynes manual, I'll ask everyone here.

The Nissan Factory Service manual for your exact year of 280ZX is the best and most complete manual you can get. They are harder to find and expensive. eBay is probably your best source for them and they run $40-80 each. Certain years like 82-83 seem to be harder to find and go for a higher price. I paid about $80 for mine a few years back.

The Haynes manual which says it covers 79-83 is the next best thing. They are very common and super cheap on eBay. If you can't afford the Nissan manual get the Haynes. Or if you don't plan to keep your Z for many years just get the Haynes and an internet connection. Set your start page to Zdriver.com

Do not bother with Chilton or other manuals. Those usually cover all Z-cars 1970-89 and some even say they cover the Maxima, 510, Z, blah blah... they are so vauge they aren't worth your time.

Manual

Theres a dealer in Texas that sell the factory manuals on cd, I got one for my 83turbo just for the tech stuff that the haynes dont cover. Dont remember what i paid but seems like it was between $50 & $75. I looked all over for one and E-bay does have them ever now and then just how to check ever few days cause they do go fast..........

Its Courtesy Nissan Inc, there in Richardson,Texas. The manual was $70.00 and its does cover everything but is a little hard to follow. Honestly have used my cheap Haynes manual and a site called Alldata.com more than the cd manual.

We use AllData in the shop but it's not too good of a program, at least the offline program. It only goes back 20 years to 1984, so it's not very good for the older vehicles. Also the information is truoblesome to navigate and it takes awhile to find the stuff you need. Haynes has a good manual that will do you well.

Not sure how far the online version on Alldata goes back but I do use it for my 83Z. Only thing is it $25 a year for 1st ride plus $14.95 for each additional car you want to add to your account. And dude is right it is kinda hard to navigate through to find what you need. I have it on my Z and my Ford Explorer and its helped me on both on things I could not find in the hanye's, mostly vaccum diagrams and trans break down's..

I would stick with the Haynes (which I have and it's been great), or go with the CD version of the shop manual from Courtesy...
