Head questions

Alright I've never done much when it comes to heads. So I'm basically a noob when it comes to any of this. Anyway, after doing searching and some help on HybridZ people have shown me how you can easily convert a P90a head over to Solid Lifters, which I'm thinking I may just go ahead and do. I know though that you need to switch the cam as well. My main question is can you swap out cams without having to pull the head? I've heard mention that the cam is held down by some of the head bolts? So I'd think you'd basically need to pull the head? I figure this way I'll just skip the trying to clean the hydraulics and just convert to solid as it'll be easier and probably cheaper than getting ahold of a solid P90.

See this thread: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...ght=remove+cam

Why? You like high rpm valve float? You like gummed hydraulic lifters? You want a head w/ irreplaceable lifters? P90 > P90A

Thanks Nismo! That makes things look even easier. It looks like that even with my noobish knowledge I could probably convert to solid lifters fairly easy and get it done within a day or so.

Niku, I would stick with hydraulic if the lifters were still in production and you could actually buy replacement ones, but currently all you can do is take apart the old ones, clean them out, maybe replace the springs and such and that's it. If they eventually wear out or fail altogether then you're stuck and either have to convert or get an already solid lifter head. Also after reading through posts on HybridZ by cygnusx-1(he was the first one to do the cleaning writeup) he really like it at first as it was really quiet, and seemed to give his Z more power, but after a while the ticking was starting to come back again.

Really? You should read through all the posts on Hybridz about this. The reason Duowing wants to replace them, is because they aren't quiet anymore... and the "Remedy" isn't a permanent fix.

And there is no "remedy" for valve float either... not a practical one anyway.

only one way to beat valve float... pneumatic valves.... mmmmmmmm. that or some ridiculously stiff springs. hydraulic just aint good enough in these older cars.

I think I even mentioned it in this thread, but as Nismo even restated: Over on HybridZ the guy to really first do the hydraulic lifter cleaning, cygnusx-1 liked it as it really made a difference in power, performance, and his motor was really quiet...for a while. Doing some searching on the conversion I found a later thread I forget how much later, but he was converting from hydraulic to solid as his lifters even though he had cleaned them, within not a long period of time began ticking again every so often. So he figured get rid of the hydraulics and go to the tried and true solid lifters. At least you can find new parts for them and the lifters themselves really never need to be replaced. Maybe sometime down the road, but for the most part there's nothing on the lifters itself to really wear out.
