sounds like a charging/ wiring issue to me. It has nothing to do with the bulbs. Try cleaning all the connections and make sure everything is grounding right. Also check the fusalbe links they might be going bad.

Your in luck just took care of my lazy eyed problems. #1 Relay issue its the middle relay closest to the motor.#2 And I changed my switch, rewired the lights new relays bulbs to no aval. Turned out the fuse wasnt makeing proper contact in the fuse block.

right now it could be either one. I can pop it back and forth between low and high really fast and they will start to act normal. I will try relay first, hell thats 2 secounds. then i got everything i need for switch. thanks

280zx headlamp wiring diagram--colorized
I encountered a similar problem on my Z...the left
headlight went-out while driving a few weeks back.
I replaced both headlamps assuming they were same age.
While troubleshooting, I found the LOW Beam light-tab
broken-off and stuck in the socket. I removed the tab,
and reinstalled the light sockets.
The Left was dim and the right headlamp was bright.
The datsun Gru-ru said that the Light Switch had burnt
contacts. The correct New one would only cost $508.00.
SO with the help of fellow Zdriver Jeff Harthoorn who
provide me a replacement Cruise Control stalk which had
the Light-SW activator attached to it (its that plastic
piece which looks like a spoon with Dimples and Valleys
molded-in. That activator pushes against a Multi-contact
assembly. Soo I removed the assembly, 2-small screws.
Then I used a thin file to clean the contacts.
Just as you would guess the left low beam and right are
again working. I used the following S130 wiring diagram
which I colorized to troubleshoot the lights.

Not sure the drawing is attached correctly, as it was not
displayed.
