My temp control doesn't light up either. I don't know if there is a light. at least not in the 79 280zx.
My injector cooling fan also did not work. I first relplaced the timer for it. Nissan sells it for about 80 bucks. Luckily i found one on ebay and it only cost me 10 bucks used and it works like a charm. Also there is a sensor on the thermostat housing. You can try trouble shooting alittle bit. First to test if your timer works, unplug the wire going into your thermostat and bypass it to the negative wire on your batter after you turned your car off. If the timer works, the fan will kick in for 17min i beleive. if that doesn't work, try changing the timer. (its located above the fuse box on passanger side). if that works, then most likely the sensor is bad. not sure where you can find one, but im sure you can. It is supposed to turn on the fan when the car's temp has gone up to 230 degrees.
Hope this helps.
