Ok I adjusted my valves and all sounded great except for one damn valve! I can not get it to shut the hell up!!! I found out why, I don't know how I missed it the first time. On the number 4 valve (exhaust) I noticed the adjusting nuts are way higher then all the others...MADE NO SENCE!!! Then the thought hit me, if it is high on this side then it has to be low on the valve side...YUP!!! IT IS!! On the top of all of the valve springs there is a little round..THING, with a slot in it that the rocker arm sits in and on the #4 valve, it is gone all together!!!! The tip of the rocker arm that sits in that piece IS still fully seated on the spring and I don't see it coming off the spring as there is still some side wall to hold the rocker in place. Please does anyone have an old extra one of these pieces they could send me so I can shut this damn thing up!? I am a little weary of driving the car like this. Here is a pic of the valve THING. It's a rough drawrrrring.

Thats exactly the piece...I just took the rocker arm off...the spring is still intact and I see no wear what so ever on the keeper or the top of the valve...the rocker is smooth where it touches the cam... no cracks or discoloration.

I made that assumption based on the price he gave above. Doesn't sound like he bought a rocker to go with is lash pad.

ive even been known to swap parts around when i need to just test stuff, ive tested the wipe pattern on combined parts and usually there pretty good, right in the center, its only if the motor has excesive wear, then it becaomes an issue, but ideally, they should be replaced as a pair, i know i did on my motor

good point shady.
although the fact that it didn't have a lash pad at all means there was excessive clearance. Excessive clearance usually leads to excessive wear. I guess it comes down to how long the engine was running without that lash pad.

Well I did alot of running around looking for that valve guide and it would have been a pain in my but to order the part somewhere so I went to a junk yard where I was told they had 3 or 4 280ZX's in their yard. I spent $2 to get in only to find out they had no 280ZX's in their yard. Well after losing close to 3 lbs in the sun all day I went home to sulk and lifted my hood to stare at my engine. Guess what I found under the #5 injector turned on its side, yup the valve guide! I soaked it in some WD40 and cleaned it up a bit and went to work on the car.
Listen carefully here, you DO NOT have to use a spring compressor or remove the cam to instal the rockers!!! The two adjusting nuts for the rocker arm are what to play with. Being that mine were real high on the number 4 valve I went ahead and took the lower "bigger" nut and raised it all the way up to the bottom of the lower nut which was also up about as high as it would go. Once the lower nut was touching the small top nut I lowered them both together with the top nut till they stopped at the bottom. They were visually lower than all the other adjusters. I put the valve guide on top of the spring, turned it slightly to slide the rocker arm tip into the slot on the guide, put one finger under the rocker arm, pulled up on it and popped it on the ball of the adjuster with little effort. Re-instaled the little spring clip and set the lash to .30. I also poured some 5W-30 on the cam and rocker...just a little and put it all back together.
Now the car is not hesitating like it did and it's pulling a little harder on the top end...oh and it will power brake easier now...wooo hooo! I think it was just dumb luck that I found the very thing that was making the car tap so bad just sitting on the intake. One less problem now.
