the fact that my spare tire has a huge slit in it gets me a bit concerned. the only thing that fits in the spare tire compartment is the original inflatable tire. any suggestions on how I could have a spare in the car neatly or what recommendations on what you guys have done?

Uber low profile 14" tire. I had one once... can't remember the actual size at the moment but it barely fit. Currently I don't have a spare tire or jack in the car... but it's not my daily either.

 

Just go to the junk yard and find you a space saver spare tire from other small nissan cars or RX7 or mazda,make sure they are in the same bolt pattern.

 

...or just get an AAA membership....

 

If you didn't live on the other side of the country I would give you one, but ya Jamal or Fricfrac have the best idea, get one at a salvage yard or get some type of Roadside Assistance, I know my insurance includes it, but then calling a wrecker for a flat is a bit lame and time consuming. But being caught in the middle of nowhere without a spare is just a pure bone head move, so having one if you do any road trips is a must.

 

I too had no jack or spare in the car, even when it was my daily driver. Lol, the way I looked at it was I wasn't planning on getting a flat, worst case scenario I could get some fix a flat at a gas station if needed or in the event of a complete blowout I had AAA. I did actually get a flat right before I stopped driving the car but lucky enough was able to patch the hole with duct tape and fix a flat to get me about a quarter mile to a tire shop.
