hows it going? i just bought a 1982 280zx from a friend of mine. he had it sitting there for about two years. its never been turn on ever since he parcked it. what are the things that i have to do befor trying to get it running again? also my friend told me it has turbo. i dont know much abou tthat stuff so what shoudl i look for. he pointed somethign out in there that look sliek a shell. but im not too sure and i would liek to know if it does have turbo. please help anyone i would really aprreciate it.

Put a good battery in and some fresh fuel then go from there. Make sure wires aren't corroded etc. Definitely do a tune up w/ plugs, wires, filters (air, fuel, oil), distributor cap and rotor, fresh oil, maybe even change gear oil, pcv, clean connections to ecu/ecm, flush coolant, maybe replace thermostat to be safe. I recommend getting a repair manual haynes or chilton or maybe even a service manual (it will also help you identify your turbo and other parts you are unsure of). Good luck.

 

...First thing you should do is to have a mechanic look at it and get some first hand advice.
It'll probably cost you a little $ but safety first, ya know.

Couple ways you can tell whether or not it is a turbo or not is obviously if it has turbo badges, but if it has the exhaust on the right side, the valve cover has the word TURBO on it, or if there is a boost gauge in one of the three pods.

 

Don't you mean the left (driver's) side? 1981 turbo has the exhaust on the left side. 1982-83 both the non-turbo and turbo have the exhaust exit on the left side.

 

ok well i checked and the exhuast is on the driver side(left) theres no boost gauge in the three pods and theres no badges on the side of the car. so i guess my car is not turbo? oh yeah the heads do not say turbo also. but right below the heads there this shell that looks liek a turbo and it connects to this black pipe that goes over the heads.

 

Does it make noise when the car is hot, is it on the passenger side or the drivers side.

 

That black thing is a little blower, it cools the injectors. I tell ricers that its a turbo, and some actually believe me

 

hahahah thats a good one. well now that i know my car is nto a turbo. how hard is it to convert it to a turbo? were can i buy it and im planning to get my engien rebuilt so what well have to be done so it well run good with turbo. i read some were that these engine arent that great with turbo is that true? sorry if im asking a lot of questions but im new to this car but i love the look to it so im trying to get as much info i can.
