Looking to buy a 280zx. need advice.

Just general advice. Best years. Looking for a manual, turbo. Price ranges. Things to look for. You know, all those little problems that could end up leading to bigger problems. Will be my first z car. Man are they awesome. Thanks

They only made the Turbo models from '81 to '83 so you can start with that.

82-83 are the best. Plus those are the only years the turbo car came with the 5-speed as an option. 1981 turbo Z's only had the automatic from the factory. Some 81 turbos have been swaped to a 5-speed. Some older 280ZX's have been swaped to a turbo... in 81 you could only get the turbo with a 2-seater auto. In 82-83 the turbo was available in the 2+2 car as well. You probably would want to go with the 2-seater.

82-83 have the interrior light dim feature, inside door lights, voice warning system, all power options, better stock shifter handle, and better brake calipers. The tail lights were also slightly different but there's nothing to gain in those.

Some of these are noted for having weak frames. Make sure there are no electrical probems. Check for underbody rust and the usual. I just got out of ricey cars and got a 280zx and believe me i doubt you will regret it. Good Luck.

Btw price ranges vary greatly. I paid 2k for mine. 81 280zx, 5spd manual, 95k, non turbo, ran great, needs interior work and had some rust. You'll probably be looking at paying more for one with a turbo though.
