New to 280zx

Hi guys. I just bought an 1982 280zx and have a problem. The engine starts up fine, but, after a couple of minutes is starts making a loud dieseling noise and shuts down, unless I'm driving on the freeway. But as soon as I get to a stop, it dies. The car looks stock. I know the egr hose is missing. I can't tell from any pictures where it hooks up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to ZDriver!

Start w/ the basics:
-Check the spark plugs
-Check the timing
-Check fuel pressure and for fuel leaks
-Check AFM and connection
-Check CHTS and connection
-Check vacuum lines

One or more of those is likely the problem. If not, we'll dig deeper.

Thanks. The car is in good shape overall and looks like it will be a fun car to drive, once I get there. I replaced the air and fuel filter, plugs, wires, cap, rotor and coil. The guy i got it from said it has a new fuel pump and that they cleaned out the tank. I know the egr is missing the hose, but, could that cause this? I'm no mechanic, but can do some of the basics. I've had z28s and mustangs before, but, the 280 is not a car I'm familiar with.

Check for vacuum leaks also.Put a hose back on the EGR valve.I have an 81 Turbo and it was crazy sensitive to vacuum leaks.I never had a problem that lead to that discovery I found it out while tinkering.Does it only start acting up after its warm or does it have some symptoms while cold?

I have now capped off the egr and the end that goes into the intake. If I advance the timing all the way, it seems to help, but, still eventually shuts down. All this happens once the idle comes down from initial start up. I do hear the fuel pump whine quite a bit, even after the engine shuts off. Could a bad fuel pump cause this?

I do not see any fuel leaks. I am trying to track down a vacuum leak I hear. What is CHTS? I live on the West Side. If you don't mind looking at it, I would be gratefull, and can make the journey to you. Thanks
