new '79 and a couple of questions

alright i picked up a '79 2+2 about 2 weeks ago and i got a few questions about it.

its a 5 spd, 82k origonal miles i cant rember if its a GL or Deluxe but the origonal window sticker (which i have) says in 1979 the fisrt owner paid about $13,000 for it which in 79 was alot of cash. it cam with a pint of acrillic enamle perfect match dupliclor paint and a FSM

minimal rust, very straight, lots of rock chips on the front (dirt road) and the suspension is mushed out (dirt road again)

some pics

i have a few questions, only 2 now that i fixed one (BCCD was out of adjustment)

#1 my gas mileage blows. before i had to adjust the BCCD to fix a idling at 2k rpm while coasting problem 6 gallons with get me just shy of 60 miles (less than 10mpg) its a little better not much though, it smells really rich on top of that, i was wondering if a 79 has an O2 sensor and where its located and if something like a CHTS is on this car like on the VG motors? other sensors in relation to gas milage?

i'm pretty sure the cold start system is working right because it start up, runs a little low but when it warms up it kicks up about 100rpm

#2 is kinda a quicky, how do i get the stereo to act like a regular stereo, like not being able to turn it on while the car is off? mabe i'll get my clock back in the process? and the antenna motor wont run when i shut the car off and i leave the fan turned on or i leave the wipers on? its werid

sorry about the legenthy post

hey he made it!

btw you can call me snw not 540 lol. and 79 i dont think there was an O2 or CHTS yet.... i might be a dirty liar on the O2 part though, if there was a CHTS it wold be a little temp sensor on the passenger side head of the motor by the number 5 cylinder the O2 sensor would be in the lower part of the manifold. would be visible.

oh wait, small print hays manual says CHTS and Water Temp are the same thing, Water temp is in thermostat housing and CHTS is in the head (obviously) i was thinking mabe it had both and i was dreading replacing it, although it isnt going to be any harder to replace than on a vg30e.

Hey there is no o2 sensor on '79-'80 280zx's. They started putting them on the '81 models. And welcome to Zdriver.

welcome!! the chts is not on a 79!! they dont have them or o2 sensors. your gonna have to start with a tune up, then start tuning the rest, get the afm adjusted correctly. now that being said, the 79's will always run rich at some point in the rpm range, so you just gotta pick your spot. and adjust the timing. those are good starting points. the radio can only be used when the key is in acc, or in the "on" position. thats just the way they are, otherwise your battery will be dead by morning. if it just dont plain work, try the fuses, otherwise turn it on!! duh.

i need to fix the radio, the guy had circuit city install it about a month before i bought it (supposedly) and they had no clue what they were doing, i am able to turn it on while the car is off and the key is out of the ignition.

the other problem is if it have the fan on and i turn the car off and take the key out it'll try to run the antenna motor untill i turn the fan off

it doesent need a tune up the plugs are clean, valve timing was redone not too long ago and the oil is like new and has about 2000 miles on it.

it needed/needs a few things, i flushed the coolant, it was dark brown really old (not choclate milk head gasket blown brown), it could use new rear diff carriers and springs shocks and struts. it probally needs a water temp sensor and a air temp sensor, the engine compartment has alot of the white surface corrosion all over the aluminum parts so some of the connections are kinda crusty while others are brand new looking still. it looks like it had a long time where it sat for a while in its life, nothing serious though.

well i was just wonderin, i do have 2 other cars:
1987 Maxima (bad Crank or Rod bearing)
1990 Mercury Cougar V6

one other thing about my Z, its on the origonal clutch and the transmission is probally going to need some work (syncro in 1st or 2nd is slightly off). the clutch is the factory clutch and it slips a little, kind of a front to back jiggle at a certian point on the tach, i dont know what else it could be

Hmm let's seem my '65 Mustang froze the first winter after I moved from So Cal to Oregon and popped out all the freeze plugs and cracked a head gasket, so that's been parked since '94. My '92 Bronco is my winter daily driver. I bought a Talon TSI awd for the wife to drive since it's good in the snow (handles great and is extremely quick too), bought the '79 ZX for the wife to use as a daily before I bought the Talon when she wanted something economical (gave that to my son after buying the Talon). Got the '82 ZX basically for free in great running condition, just traded a few small parts off my $250 '80 ZX 2+2 parts car for it. Picked up a free 5.0 T-bird so I can pull the engine and AOD transmission in case I decide to go AOD in the Mustang when i get it going again. My '91 F-350 4x4 dropped a valve and took out a cylinder (busted keeper) in the 7.3 diesel, I have too much money in mods into the truck to let it go, but not enough money to buy another engine yet. Bought a '73 Olds Delta Ninety Eight for the 455 engine to get my jet boat running (it's going to the junk yard next spring). I also have 2 wildland fire engines that I'm part owner of, so I keep the newer bigger one ('97 F-450 4x4) parked at my house, we contract that out to the Forest Service in the summer. I have 14 acres to park them on and they're all paid for, so I figure as long as I still have them there's a chance that someday I'll get around to fixing them up again.
