New windshield

Well after a mishap with my Z I need a new windshield, anyone know how much this may set me back to get "professionally" installed?

So much for buying myself a cool B-Day gift, stead I get to waste money on a windshield. And of course it decides to rain the same day it broke (it has a hold in it...)

There is a place called Auto Wrecking Parts in North Salt Lake (ph#801-746-0801‎) that has 3 ZX's and 2 still have windshields (I believe both are still good). Kind of a drive from Vernal, but if you are desperate...

I had mine installed for $130 about 3 years ago. I just called around getting quotes. Some places "said" they would beat anyone else's price. $130 was the lowest anyone would go, but I bet it's a lot more now.

Funny thing... the Pick n Pull had the cheapest price for my Geo.

No picture, no camera anymore @.@ I had the hood up while I was installing some new struts in the front while then a gust of wind slammed the hood down and the hood hit a wrench and the wrench pretty much shot through the window @.@

Well a Niuw View Auto Glass said they would do it for $160 and they come to you for free so I'm doing that.

And it was kinda cool to see yet I swear it almost made me cry. Oh well My old window had a few good chips in it and the seal around it was leaking.

Break out the wire brush and POR15 it. Then tell them off like 2by2 says.

But anyways Im going to work on it tomorrow and give him a call, he said he will take the trim off my other Z to fix mine so thats a plus

Ok there was holes in the metal around the window frame so no matter what I dont get a warranty on it. He put in it got the trim on it and cleaned it HOLY CRUD its SUPER clear

Then he charged me $200 instead of $160 cuz of the labor for the trim and the rust...
Oh well it looks awesome lol
I only had $180 @.@ So I bummed the $20 off a friend and Im paying it tomorrow.

Hey BlueKitsune I am a fellow Utahan. I live in Lehi, but grew up in Idaho. I would like to take out my windshield and put a coat of POR15 on my rusty areas before I have the window guy come out to put in a new unit. My top piece of trim is already off but I can not figure out how to get the sides and bottoms off. Do you know how, or anyone else here? Also to take the window out do I just run a razor blade around and then push it out with my feet from the inside?
I looked for a DIY thread but could not find one. I think I might do a write up on my work if there is not one already. If there is please post the link.

This site rocks

w00t! Another UT Z'er!

Side trim: Open door, remove rubber window seal, remove phillips screws, remove trim.
Top & bottom trim: Slide out sideways (left or right) after removing side pieces.

To remove the windshield you really need to use a metal braided wire or stiff cutting knife. You'll be there for days with a razor blade.

This is what the pros use:

Sweet!!! Thanks for the quick reply. We might have to have a Utah car meet some day if there are enough of us. I have some of that wire and can wrap it around two pieces of old broom handle for leverage.

^^^ You know we have a Z Club of Utah right? www.zclubofutah.com

But it's a complete dictatorship & you are basically a nobody unless you constantly pay your dues and go to all meets (Z and non-Z related). That's why I chill here & not there. And Sweet350z (the pres) is "fun" to get along with.

I did not know^^. I am more the relaxed non due paying kind of club guy. I have a 1970 SWB Chevy truck and spend some time at 67-72chevytrucks.com, I have met a few crazies with my same truck sickness there and we hang out every once in a while or trade parts. That is kind of what I had in mind.

Wow I thought this thread might have died XD

AS for the window I got it all in and I treated the rust, tho there was holes in the metal @.@ And the "pro" that installed my window didnt use a cable then again the rust was so bad the window just lifted out >.>

AND Nice to see another UT Z! I would like to meet other Z as well all I get to see here is Z31s and up. I'm next to positive I own the only 280ZXs in Vernal lol

Speaking of trucks I'm getting a new one here soon. A Subaru Samber Kei Truck! lol

Did they replace anything besides the window? Like trim or any kind of gasket? What did you treat the rust with? Did they have the widow in stock or was there a wait?

They just replaced the window, I had spare trim laying around so I asked them to put it on and the used a window glue to install the window and trim. I used I wire wheel the some bondo rust remover and finished it over with a zinc based primer. They had to order it but it was only a day or so wait.

It almost seems like there is a hard plastic gasket inbetween the top of the window and window frame. When I pull out the window can I pull every thing out down to the metal or is there any hard plastic gaskets that need to be kept?

Well I cut my window out last night. It looks like I will need to do some rust treatment. Has any one used Navel Jelly to remove the rust in this area or is it to aggressive? The hard plastic strip was the strip to connect the stainless trim to, behind this strip is were most of the water got trapped and I have excessive rust. All the clips had broken off so that explains why I could not figure out how to reattach the top piece of trim The bottom trim strip was in dab shape as well. It looks like I will have to replace them. There was also a foam gasket that goes in between the dash and the windshield that came out as I removed the window glue. I don’t see how it goes back either. I ordered a magazine from the dragon place which I hope will have a parts breakdown and the parts I need. I guess I should check and see if the window company can get the trim strips as well.
