No ordinary turbo swap

Ok, ok I know, but I already checked threads and didnt find any thing on a Z31 turbo to a s130 motor swap. I'am assuming you would have to fabricate the motor mounts and the wiring nightmare that it would create, thats not even getting into the driveline issues. Any body have a linky or have I just gone off the deep end?

eh... there's plenty of threads if you search for the right things like VG30 or Z31T or ENGINE / MOTOR SWAP...

It would be A LOT easier, beneficial, cost effective, and less painful to swap in an L28ET.

Actually, no. You haven't gone off the deep end. However! Most people don't do the Z31 turbo motor swap in a 280ZX. It's just SO much easier to swap a 280ZX turbo in there. Hell, even Apollo and Bleach can pull that one off!

It can be done, but there's not a lot of support or knowledge out there for a Z31 motor swap. For that amount of work, you'd be better off going with a small block Chevy. Ooh! Sacrilege!

Also, there's way more high performance parts support for the L series motors in the 240z/280ZX than any of the Z31's. 13 years of production for the L6 vs. 6 years for the VG30E and they weren't much of a race car during the Z31's time around either.

If you're dead set on it, more power to ya! We'll all be here rooting for you!

Cheers,
LWW

gotta agree, this swap is not really worth the trouble. the vg30et had little aftermarket support. if all you want is gobs of power, do the SBC swap. there is TONS of support for that.if you want to stay nissan, l28t is the easiest. or you could go with the RB series.

Thanks guys, I saw a wrecked 86 Z31t in town and started thinking. My 82 needs rings, and if I got the whole Z31t for cheap I could possibly do the swap. Well gotta score the car first. If it happens I'll definetly document everything and let you guys know what happens. Thanks for everything

well rings are cheap and easy, id start with that, so you can drive. (in frame job, kinda) then save parts and money and decide your powerplant. some guys are even putting nissan 4 cyl. in there cars. something like 450 rwhp. not bad, just doesnt sound right out the back tho.

Buy a nice 1988 300ZX NA and then do the VG30et swap into that.

but ya, if I can do a turbo engine swap and fix all the bugs in only 3 months of cursing and swearing then anybody can do it! Even Apollo? well, we'll have to see if he can finish it.

There really are not bennefits to the VG30. Its only 200cc larger and still has a SOHC. The ECU is better but that's why you swap that ECU and MAF onto the L28.

If cheap and easy is what you're after then just swap out the L28 block/head for another NA like you have now.

Entropy what is the SBC swap? I still dont understand all the tech abreviations. In regards to the VGet into the s130 I'm kinda looking for a challenge(I can drive the 84T while I'm doing this), besides the VGet would make the s130 more of a mid-engine car wouldnt it? And you could still get 240+ rwhp if you did the pathy intake, IC, exhaust and computer, then run that boost up. The L28et I finally scored is reserved for the 77' project I'm starting. I have a wrecked 76' w/a N42 that runs like a champ! I could take the motor out and put the headers and a 2 1/2" pipe on it and just drop it in the and 82' and go. But wheres the fun in that?
That guy emailed me on the 86', it has a 5-speed and he wants $200 for the trans, or $800 for the whole thing(it got poped on the drivers side front quarter panel). Door stamp was 6/86 which means it dosnt have LSD. Btw how did nissan split the years, was it any thing prior to september falls in the stamped year. Any thing past september falls into the next year? Never really understood how model years worked. Just curious if a LSD would ever show up in a late model 86'.

Hey straight hate, don't listen to people discouraging you. What you are doing is totally different. I also give you mad props for the cool idea. And I for one, would like to see it a success. I have never heard anybody put a Z31 motor in a 280zx. That would be pretty cool, and you would have a ballsy Z. As in regards to the SBC, it means small block chevy. But please don't go that route, too many people do it. And it gets old to hear. No offense to anybody though, that is not my intent.

I am far from an expert, but like I said, if you want to do the Z31 to an S130 swap. I would verry much like to see it, and it be a total success. Whatever you decide good luck to you man. And keep us posted.

the hardest thing i haev seen when it comes to putting a vg30et into a 280zx is the steering shaft needs to be customized..

Thanks Wild man, I have never heard of anybody doing it either and I thaught if I could pick the 86' up for cheap it could work, you just have to have the donor car to pull it off. I was thinking I would use the rack out of the 75', it might give me the room I need. The power steering wouldnt fit right anyways, I dont think. I'll keep you guys posted as this thing pans out.

that modified steering shaft was in a 240Z right.... not a 280ZX?
They may be different.

Do you think a 75' 280Z would work. Its not a 240 but would be a lot closer to what I would need to clear the turbo.

Here's the 87' talked to the kid today. I get my 82'et tomarrow, so this is the plan. Get the turbo running, then pull the motor out for the 77', then put my N/A motor into 82et chassie and trade the guy straight across for the 82'. He wants $800. for it, I paid $500 for the L28et with the swatsika rims, so I figure I'll make out in the long run, and keed the **** rims and the motor and gain a VG30et from the whole thing. Now comes the fun part!
