non turbo horses

Does anybody know the highest amount of horses a non turbo 280zx motor can reach . I have a goal to get mine as high as I can get it, but while still being street legal. Screw emission laws. I'm in nebraska...what emission laws ?

ya, I was thinking 280 crank hp on a fully built race engine. Not street legal and probably not attainable for a home mechanic.

200whp is very feasable and a more realistic goal.

I've seen a $10,000 3.2L stroked motor with triple Mikuni's make 270 whp. It drove ok on the street, but got about 12 mpg...

If you do manage to obtain the maximum amount of horsepower that can be abstracted from an L28 then you're definitely not going to be driving that thing on the street. That's the joy of forced induction, you can obtain twice the power levels and still remain streetable and have a lot more change in your pocket when all is said and done. A lot of people look at the initial cost of turboing their Z car and get scared into looking for cheaper ways to get power. Well the truth is that by the time you can extract enough power out of the NA L28 to even equal the stock turbos capabilities that you'll have already far and exceeded the cost of turboing the car in the first place. And then once you're turboed, each modification there after will net a larger power gain then if it were performed to an NA. NA's only good if it's a requirment such as a class rule or something like that. Otherwise, you just can't compare to turbocharging a car. And with the efficiency of todays turbos lag and all the other negatives associated with older turbos are long gone. If it's power you want, there is no down side to turboing your car. Period. (that is of course considering you do it right )
