Not happy with my ZX
#54
No...it still wont come up and out...fuel lines, power steering pump, Alternator pulley. Holy crap, I am gonna yell pretty soon...to think I have yet to do this on my '82 so I can swap them

Success!!!! I got that bastard out!!! Undo the fuel lines, move out of the way...Unbolt powers Steering, move out of the way, Undo Coolant hose, move out of the way and she comes right out with a whole lot of room to work. Had I done this to begin with it might take 20 min start to finish with new Alt in. Now....off to remove the other one and put all this back together!!!
Thanks guys.
Thanks guys.

hey guys the fastest easiest proven way to get the alternator out, is to remove the 3 bolts that hold the bracket for the alternator on. it takes 5 minutes. you just need to rotate the alternator around a bit, and your done!! too bad im not on here during the day to help good to hear thxone!! ive done lots of alternators, trust me, 5 on my car alone!

Yeah, what Shady said. I've never had to remove anything when replacing the alternator. I used to replace them every 6 months or so on my 1980 280ZX when it had a 2300 watt RMS stereo system. I would burn through the diodes in about 6 months. Fortunately, my neighbor's father owned an alternator/starter repair shop. I bought an extra one and he would rebuild it right away and just keep it on the shelf for me until I killed another one, I would drive to the shop, pull the dead alternator in about 10 minutes, put the new one on and by the time it was all buttoned back up, he would have the bad one rebuilt!
You just have to pull it towards the back of the engine bay and twist it out at the right angle and it should come right through. It should go out the bottom pretty easy too.

Well, I think I still have all my factory stuff on the car...like the pan below the radiator and other stuff that was in the way. I don't mind doing it the way I had to...now that it will take no time at all to do....which I am sure I will now that I have my 1,000 watt beast!! (see audio thread)

Hey man, don't feel bad. It took me over 8-9 hours to do an alternator change. And I had to, so I could go to work that night. So I only got 2-3 hours sleep that day. Man I was a mess that night, but I survived. Now I can change an alternator in about a half hour or so. A cake walk now, glad to hear it was a success for you bro'

Don't you love how the first time you set out to do something simple it ends up taking hours.
Like doing the injectors on the Z. First time took me like hours to just get that crap out of the car. Now I can pull the injectors and put them back in in about an hour and a half or so. Probably faster.
