O-ring on brake master cylinder?

I've been trying to solve the squishy brake pedal on an 80 280zx. Today I pulled the master cylinder off and found some sort of gluey, goopey sealant around the edges of where the MC met the booster. Also, there was no O-ring on the MC where it mates to the booster. I'm more of a vintage BMW guy, and neither of these things are ones I've come across before, I've always seen a dry fit between the two coupled with a small O-ring to seal. What is normal on a Z of this era?

Thanks guys, this was very helpful. Jamal, yes I may be interested in a MC, a booster too perhaps. Drop me an email at trichardson AT clifbar DOT com and we can discuss further. Thanks for the offer.
