Old ZX owner - new stereo questions
I am working on restoring my 1979 280ZX (the first new car I owned) and have a lot of questions about fixing up the interior (which isn't in bad shape at all).
I want to install a CD player and better speakers and wonder if someone can tell me whether the Radio Faceplate that Motor Sport sells works well. I am talking about the one they ahve that allows you to install a standard size stereo (page 27 of their current catalogue). Also, has anyone out there used the rear speaker panel that they sell (it is sort of pricey at $175 for the tan vinyl one that matches my interior). I don't want to spend the $ if they don't work as advertised. I was thinking of disconnecting the front speakers and using just the two rear (it has space for 6x9 inch speakers) plus maybe also the ones behind the seats.
Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I got one at Circuit City (in stock faceplate) for $20, and it fit almost perfectly...
I also got a decent set of boxed 3 ways (one BIG box) from Pep Boys for $70 or so that "just" fit in the rear. Has neons around the bass speakers, which really turns on the car show goers. I do need to add an amp and a 10" sub soon, though...

I used to have a mounting plate made out of plastic. It was a kit I bought. A thief ripped it out easily but still couldn't get my CD player out. Anyway, now I used a piece of thick aluminum so it'll take more than one finger to pull the center cash apart. I'd recomend using something sturdy. If that kit from Circuit City is plastic, don't bother.
I spray painted mine with gloss black. it looks pretty good still.
