Questions about my 280 (Added questions)

I have a few questions:

1. I have a green light that comes on about a 1/4 when i first drive. The light is top right of the tranny(auto) console in the center. Green means good???

2. i have a red light that is on, on the dash. Right between the tach and speedo at the bottum. My oil pressure stays at the first lil line on the gauge when i am going up to 20mph and then gets halfwayish when i get to about 70mph. And the batt. volts stays a 14volts. so i don't think it is oil pressure or my ALT. (OH btw my 1999 s-10 the alt. died on the way to pick up my 280. I think it found out i was seeing another car and took some revenage. But that's just me. )

3. how hard is it the change a head unit, speakers and speaker wires out on one of these cars?

This is all for now, bur TRUST ME there will be more !!

Thanks for the help!!!

not sure if I understood all that... but I'm tryin...

The square box between the tach & speedo is the warning box. push the lil stick button by it & it will flash what is wrong. Dunno what ya mean by "I have a green light that comes on about a 1/4 when i first drive." On ya oil pressure: The oil pressure sending switch might need to be replaced, get some fresh oil in, or get a new oil pump. The stereo is pretty easy to get in & out.

For fuel: If it's a turbo, use 91+ octane... n/a... use 87

Per the owner's manual, all the 280ZX's were designed to run on Regular unleaded. Some people claim to feel better results with higher octane. Though, neither the compression ratio nor output of the stock motor would demand higher octane.

lol, my 94 Ford Ranger did the same thing to me after I put my Z motor back together. I was going to go to work to check how many hours I had so that I would be able to know if I had enough money for the down payment on the insurance. I was getting off of the freeway, and the clutch slave cylinder/pilot bearing assembly went out on me, and I was tuck on the side of the road. I ended up having to drop the tranny in the truck less than a week later because the head on my Z ended up being warped, so I needed to fix the truck to be able to get around.

nismo's right about that little box, its a warning light that does a system check every time u push the button its supposed to pick up any probs around the car and when it does it will flash on the screen thingy. although i dont know how reliable it is mine has always said battery and headlight but voth are fine so i dunno....

the stereo isint a problem at all when i bought mine i knew basically nothing but still managed to mount 4 new speakers around the car and install a head unit where the old tape deck used to be.

As for the fuel i run premium cause my motor seems to run better and goes further on the higher octane fuel (95 or 98 octane) than the lower stuff.

This was in the item description on ebay:

This is to be color matched (any good vinyl paint) or left black and installed over the original dash pad.
so yes. Just make sure you use a good paint, made for vinyl... Maybe even a clear coat.

If I'm not mistaken... I believe I saw the little green light near the shifter on the tranny is linked to tell you when the converted is locked up... how I'm not sure but that's what I want to say for some reason

The red light was telling me my rear tail light was out. So i need a new one.
Anyone have a rear tail light for a 83 2 seater driver's side?

The Swede was right about the green light.

Now i am noticing it is pulling to the right a lil. So i am going to look at that this weekend.

Also, anyone in the ATL know of any good junkyards with a lot of 280zx cars?

Thanks for all of your help guys!!

Pretty sure Autozone, Checker, Napa, K-mart, corner gas station, or local grocery store will have the rear light bulbs... they're not just 280zx specific...

Those dash caps are common. You should be able to order one in blue, brown, or black from Motorsport Auto or some other Z-car companies. Do some searches online for dash cap companies. i think I saw caps for most of the popular datsuns from the 70's and 80's.

Not sure about GA, but here in Birmingham, AL (only about a 2 hour drive) we have a Pull-A-Part w/ about 12 280ZX's..

Added Some more questions

This was onw LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG weekend. School started up again and I had to replace the ALT. and batt. on my truck. I also had to replace all of the fuel injectors and some vac. and fuel lines. Well..... i ran into a quite of few snags with the injectors. First finding 6 was a pain in the ***! after going about 6 diff auto parts store i found all six BUT, the selas didn't come with 2 of them. So, went back and got the seals.

So i got all of the old injectors taken out. Well, after I got them i notice on the new ones that they didn't come with that lil block thing that screws on to the engine. (i posted pic). I need THREE!! WHere can i get them???

Also the old injects are longer then the new ones what is up with that?

Thanks for the help!!

I think this is the fuel filter or maybe a vapor deal. Whatever it is, when i went to change the bottom fuel line to it. it started leaking the Orange stuff. Anyone know what it is and should i be worried?

The ones i have my fingers on are those fuel lines??

Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!!!

I gotta ask... do u have any repair manuals for the z? If not... you really should invest the $10 and get a Haynes 280zx repair book from Autozone / Checker / Napa, or your local parts store.

The orange stuff is most likely rust (has the car been sitting a long time?) and the 2 tubes that your fingers are touching, are not fuel lines, but vapor lines that feed into the canister & sucked back into the intake to be reburnt (for the environment's sake).

You could always try a junk yard for the blocks. If not you can try MSA for new ones. The line on the right is a vapor line but it does run from the fuel tank.

Oh and the first two pics are of the fuel filter and the one on the right is the charcoal canister for the fuel vapor. And if you mean that you pulled the hose off the fuel filter and orange stuff came out then you may want to think about getting your tank cleaned or replaced because that is supposed to be gasoline.
