Radiator - Standard Vs Automatic

I ordered in a raditor for my 5sp but I noticed the rad has the hook ups for the automatic transmission cooler. I'm assuming they are the same rad for both cars and from my searching on the web page its a little unclear. Do you just leave the two auto cooler pipes disconnected or do they need to be plugged somehow?

Just leave them unplugged. It's a separate closed system to cool the ATF.

Thanks NismoPick - I think it was one of your threads that eluded to leaving it off but I wasn't sure. Just out of curiosity is it the ATF that goes into the seperate chamber in the rad or is it an interchanger - I'm assuming its ATF...

Use it for a Oil Cooler, or a fuel cooler

or don't.

The engine oil is too high of a pressure to trust a simple hose clamp connection on the radiator.

I would be more worried about something inside the radiator blowing up then the connection really

So you trust fuel hose and hose clamps to contain 40-80PSI of fuel, but won't trust them for 30-65psi of oil pressure?

Do not use it for fuel!!!! A minor front ender could end with a BOOM!!!!!!

But I like then idea of using it for an additional oil cooler!!

yes leave it off, atf is about 120psi thru those lines. pull one off sometime!! its just a loop line that runs thru the lower tank, nothing fancy, most tranny shops wont use that one after a rebuild, they install a aux cooler with its own fins anyway.

Or you could spend $5 at the junkyard and get a real oil cooler!

Apparently its a non issue since the rad Rockauto.com sent me is the wrong one - doesn't fit - looks like it might be for an S30 since the lower outlet hits the front cross member..... grrrrr. Angry phone call tomorow....

Well that is the other frustrating part. They had the rad listed for $147 with one left in stock so I ordered it. They called and said they didn't carry that one anymore and for whatever reason they did have that particular brand anymore but they could replace it with an equal quality/warranty one but it was $180. I said fine and they shipped it off. Turns out its the EXACT same part number, etc so I wasn't too happy about that but now that its the same one at a higher price AND the wrong part all together.... and it looks to me like its a remaned unit which it didn't say anything about it being remaned either....

This is my first order with rockauto.com and unless they straighten this out pronto.....

What is was wrong with the old radiator, enough to need replacing? $180 is fairly steep for a stock radiator, when aluminum radiators can be had for the same price or cheaper.

x2....

Unless the bumper or a big rock punched the fins, it's usually repairable. I've taken several radiators to a local radiator / gas tank guy, and for $20-$30 he will pressurize it, submerge it in water, find the leaks, and repair.

in victoria where he is, 180 for a rad is a deal. fricfrac id go to lordco, they even have a warranty. i had one built from 2 rads. new 3 core and a tank from each. if your tanks are good, a rad shop there may charge 120ish to re-core.

Lol - Lordco was $351 WITH my discount - that's why I went with the RockAuto. They said they would refund me the difference and give it to me for $142 (haven't checked yet to see if I got the credit). I was down in the US so I dropped the wrong rad off to FedEx and they cross shipped my new one which should arrive in Seattle tomorow and be in Victoria the following day. As much fun as jack stand racing is I'll be glad to have 'er back on the road

Oh yea and one of the local club guys told me AFTER I ordered the rad in that he had about three ZX rads at home :/ figures....
