Rough Shifting
My 81 ZX's transmission is a little rough especially when shifting into second and third too but not *** bad. It's usually worst at higher RPM's and on the rare ocassion it has popped out of gear. Does anyone know what could be worn or if maybe a transmission flush would help? I don't know much about tranny's yet.

Well explain what the problem is more deeply.
The roughness could be a worn universal joint..do you feel any vibrations through the accelerator at 50-60mph ? or any vibration through the gear shifter ?
Is there a clunk from 1st too 2nd ?? if so describe.
As for slipping out of gear it could be a worn bush witch is easily replaced.

More descriptive
Sorry your right I wasn't desriptive enough...Well it's not so much that is is rough it's more the clunk like you described between first and second is where it is mostly going from second to third as well there is a clunk but not quite as bad. I haven't noticed any vibration through the gear shifter.
If I really accelerate fast with my rev's around 5000+ when I shift from first to second the clunk is a lot more prominent, at low rpm there is only a minor clunk.
I also find that the it's not as smooth as it use to be going into gear. ie. it is a smooth transission inbetween gears but going into gear seems to require more force than it should.

Sounds like a worn Universal joint. same thing on my mate Bluebird though like yours he hasnt got the vibration that comes in once its totally screwed.
If you can put your car on a hoist and check it for play.
Also could be a diff mounting bracket or worn or broken gearbox mount.
Hope this helps
