RPM dead zone/engine dies
Hi all, I have a 1982 280ZX 2+2 Non Turbo. My Z has somewhat of a dead zone between about 1750-2250 RPMs. In this zone, it feels like the car completely lacks power but once out of that range of RPMs it kicks you back in your seat and zips right along. Also related to this problem (I think) is the fact that when I drive the car in this RPM range (55 MPH in 5th gear) the engine will die for a one to two second period then start running again as if it never happened. I drive to a town which is about 8 miles away and it never fails to do it on this trip...except a couple times when I left the car in fourth gear and ran around 3000 RPMs for the short trip. I had the muffler replaced last summer because it was rusting through and the chrome tip on the muffler is new caked with black exhaust crap and is starting to show signs of rust spots.
Here's a list of replacements I made last summer. My car wasn't running very well which ended up being the ECU.
Exhaust Gas Sensor
Fuel Filter
Cleaned my K&N Air Filter
Checked the Mass Air Flow Sensor
Had the Catalytic Converter checked out
Checked for vacuum leaks
I also replaced a few other items which I figured were due to be replaced.
Ignition Coil
Plug Wires
Spark Plugs
Muffler (was rusting through)
Fuel Injectors/seals (were leaking fuel onto the block)
After checking the above items, I took my car to the Nissan Dealership and had them diagnose it and they said it was the ECU. I replaced that and the car runs great except for in the "Dead Zone"
Other than the high performance ignition coil, plugs, plug wires, and air filter, my car is completely stock and as original as I can keep it. It has 166,000 miles on it and has been in my family since 1985. Any help you guys can give me is greatly appreciated!
