rpm troubles...

Hey all,

I have a question regarding my Z's rpms...I have a '79 280ZX n/a with a 5-speed tranny. In neutral as well as in gear, I have a problem with the rpm's suddenly surging, both at idle and at speed. At idle, they will just shoot up from about 1000 rpm up to anywhere between 2000 and 3000 rpm and then back down. Any idea what the problem could be? I appreciate any help you guys can provide. Thanks.

I didnt think there was any in between with an ignition module. Like either it works or it doesnt. If the ignition module goes out, the car shouldn't be able to start still, right? I was talking to a friend and he said maybe my throttle position sensor is bad?...Is my '79 model even equipped with one? Do you think this could be a possibility? Lemme know what you think. Thanks again.
