rpm's shooting up
ok. just lately ive noticed that my engine's been missing. when the 280zx would idle, it would vibrate and rock back and forth. also, when trying to accelerate, my rpm's would shoot up out of nowhere. it got to the point where it'd take me atleast a minute and a half to accelerate 5 more mph on the interstate! i opened the hood and was looking around. i heard a clicking. i touched the spark wires on teh distributer cap and WOW!! what a shock! so i changed those out, now i dont hear the clicking that was making my car vibrate. but my rpm's still shoot up out of nowhere! what's wrong wtih my Z?! please, if you have any ideas, please email me: shetookhimtothelake3@hotmail.com

Two problems, maybe:
One, the wires or the coil are probablys ending a surge to the tachometer and causing it to jump up but the engine is not actually jumping up in rpms. I'm guessing by your description
Two, your engine is missing out on 2 or more cylinders due to this electrical issue. This causes an uneven idle and huge loss in power.
Replace the coil and the little electricals around it if any. Maybe replace your distributor cap and spark plugs too. All of this is not too expensive, and hopefully it will restore power and a smooth rpm reading.
check your battery terminals and make sure you have a good connection on both the positive and ground. Run an extra ground wire off the intake manifold to the body or frame of the car on that same side of the engine.

rpm's jumping up
it has to be something wtih the engine, because when i accelerate, you can hear the engine reving up to about 5000rpm. and i have to give off the gas, let the rpm's fall back down, then slowly try to accelerate again. ill try to replace the spark plugs, if that doesnt do it, im afraid ill be back here again. thanks so much for your help!

you know what... it might not even be your engine.. it could be your clutch slipping or your auto tranny torque converter going out... if you can get your car to rev that high and it wont go anywhere... it might not be yoru engine....

Damn you Isaac i was going to say that LOL
Yeah dude its your Clutch,
Though dont make it any worse then it is !
Dont race the car avoid dumping the clutch it will only wear it out more.
Though there are also more things to condiser...Scored Flywheel but can check that till you drop the box out from underneath..
If its a Auto check the fluid (ATF FLUID) If that is alright your internal bands in the atx box need adjusting..(get it done proffesionally)
Now what i want you to do is try the following exactly as i say (this is to determine if its your clutch or the release mechinism)
1. Take the car to the start of a incline.
2. Put the car in 5th gear with the clutch all the way in and engine running.
3. Release the clutch at medium speed with no accelarator at all.
NOW, what should happen if you have a good clutch is that the car will stall and if it is going too let it. If it does not stall imediatally then its your clutch.
So if it stall imediatally its your release mechonisim on the gearbox..not enough free travel eg clutch is hanging on when it is full engaged..
well thats got the clutch problems sorted (we hope)
What do you expect for 22,000volts the ticking sound was a lead shorting out onto the body or engine. thus running on 5 cylinders and making the car "hunt" "surge" and in technical terms "RUN LIKE ****"
Also Check your engine mountings for cracking or breakage of the rubber..if they are broken or damaged new mounts will fix this problem. if the mounts are fine and the car is running on all 6 cyl then it could be your gearbox mounts..
Dont rule out things before you know how they can affect your car..by the sounds of things you lack motor mechanic skills. feel free to ask here. what Isaac can some up in 2 words it takes me 2 pages to explain fully
now after that long post hope everything pans out for your ZX.
