slop in the gears...
I recently replaced the worn-out transmission in my '79 280ZX with another tranny. However, I just started noticing that there is a lot of slop in the gears, i.e. the shifter can be moved around a lot even when the car is in gear. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to reduce some of this movement? Thanks in advance for any help.

Try Zhome.com and check out their technical library. There is an article there that has a step by step process on how to replace worn shifter bushings. I have heard of people pressing in (now help me out here Darrel) Chrysler door hinge?? bushings that you can get from the HELP section at your local autoparts store.
Hope this helps you out.

sloppy shifter
ok r ran my car very hard and never tore the tranny up but on the end off the shifter their is a *** with a plastic cap and when they get old they tend to break. so remove your shifter *** and console, now remove the shifter pin pull the shifter out and the trased out plastic cap. replace it reassemble it and enjoy the z

go to the "stealership".... and actually in this case there not that bad i got all three bushings and the total was like 12-15 dollars... so there not too whack.... there is the cap that everyone is talking about at the bottom and there are the two the actually hold the shift lever. the one at the bottom (at the end of the lever) is as stated a little cap that sits in the shift assembly for the trans. the two that hold the leveract as a fulcrum for the movement of the lever (they cusion the movement) but again its like a 5-10 min job at the most and dont skrimp as the dealer doesnt charge alot for these parts......(at least not in my area)

Ok, i got the new bushings from the dealership. But how am i gonna get the old bushing off the bottom of the control lever? Should I just try to break it off and push the new one on myself or am i going to have to take it somewhere to be pressed on? I just dont want to pry the old one off and not be able to put the new one on myself. Thanks.
