Slow 280ZX tachometer - inaccurate tach
Has anyone else seen a tach that just doesn't react very fast?
I know what a properly functioning tach looks like. I can even hear the engine rev and the tach's repsonse is mushy and delayed. It even rests at 200 to 900 rpm when the car is off. Whats the deal?

When dad and my brother and I were restoring an old Citroen GSA Special 1982, we ran across the same problem.
This problem is usually just related to the RPM gauge itself, gauges wears out too, especially RPM gauges (Second to the speedometer gauge, RPM gauges are the most active ones.)
Best thing to do would be to switch it, there are some cases where slow gauges get better response by taking off the cover and push the needle down a little.
But judging by your problem, again I`d say, best thing would be to just switch it with a new one or a second hand original one.

my maxima tach did that. the sticking and slow response thing.
it was werid because it only did it when it was cold out, i yanked it and it turned out it was just gummed up, the grease went all funky so i took some solvent to get the old stuff off of there and put some new stuff on and i never had the same problem.
worth trying before getting a new guage.
