Spanked!!!
Proof that no matter how quick you think your car is, there's always somebody quicker.
I'm at a stop light last night when an old school VW Beetle rools up along side me. He gave his motor a couple of loud revs and looked me dead in the eye. I respond with a few throttle jabs to let him know I'm not running a stock car. The light turned green... all I can say is that it was like my car was in slow motion. That little VW ate my car's breakfast, kicked the dog and insulted my wife all at one time. It wasn't even close. Reaction time, experience... no matter here, his car was just plain quick. We both end up pulling into the same gas station and this little punk is all smiles. I asked him what he was running and he told me it was a seriously built Bernie Bergman 1835 (Bernie is a legendary VW guru). That explained it. Of course he wants to keep rubbing it in so I finally told him to meet me at the autocross track and we would see just how cool his car really was. That shut him up, but I still wasn't satisfied. I got rocked. I felt so dirty that I had to go home and take a shower.

Well, at least you found out what he was running. Would've been a nightmare not knowing after losing to an old VW. Did he have a turbo setup on it? I know it's been done...

Those bugs must weigh 1900lbs or something.
A friend of mine from around here has a L18 powered 510. High compression, cam, dual sidedrafts ect. He said he beat a stock 280zx turbo once. I've driven one of his trucks with an L16 in it and it was surprisingly fast, so a 4-cyl can be built pretty well. I guess even a VW....

They just did a VW bug on Monster Garage a couple weeks ago. I'm not sure who the engine builder was, but that thing was puttin' out over 250hp and if I recall it weighed around 1400 lbs.
Jesse ran a 10.40 1/4 on his third pass and if the track had been run all weekend and enough rubber put down it would have run 9's!!
9 second 1/4's is full on NHRA license required with NHRA certified full cage.
That's freakin' quick. My Z isn't that quick, but I know I could spank it on top speed. Those old bugs aren't **** for aerodynamics!

I've been clocked by radar on the track at over 140 mph and I've gone faster but have no proof or documentation. I've done over 170 in a highly modified Corvette, but the 90's Vette's have considerably better aerodynamics than the 280ZX and this one had a full ground effects kit.
The only place I know where you could go 180 in the US even remotely safely is I-40 between LA and Las Vegas or possibly west of Vegas on I-40 to New Mexico.
