A Swap

I wanted to ask you guy's about this, and try to get some opion's about this before i make it finale. Going Hybrid. I have my hands on a 351 MDF with C6 auto trany. Trany is new rebuilt. motor has all new valves and seals and lifter's. New 2 berrel holly carb. Freash Paint. She is freshly rebuilt. 0 miles. The catch, it needs one new rod. and maby a barring for that rod. No miles on it. they started it, heard a light knockin(i was there) shut it off. and now it can be mine if i want it. Only catch for me. He wants a strait trade for my new Fuel Rail, T/B, and T/B Spacer as soon as they come in. Think a 351MDF would fit nicely into a Z?

What exactly is the motor? Year, mods? I am sure if it a ford 351 then a 2 barrel may be choking it a bit. The C6 is pretty damn strong, i prefer the AOD, I had one behind a 1993 F/I 302 in my 67 fairlane and it still had pull but I love that overdrive. I would say go for it, the dizzy is in the front so you could set the engine back pretty far. Should have pretty good pull in a ZX.

I thought about the V8 swap and in my oppinion I would go with the SBF over the SBC...I just like the fact that the dizzy is up front and the firing order gives it a different sound than the Chevy also the 302 is comparable to the 350 Tq wise so the 351 should be even better. Hooking it all up is the minor part. I love a small block chevy but after driving both I would do the SBF all day long, I think if you go for it you will be happy. How modified is the 351, is it a Windsor or a Cleveland? How big is that 2 bbl?

Carb is factory replacement. the motor it's self is all stock from factory. all new part's are OEM replacement.

only problem is, those ford 351 are hard on gas, and really heavy, some say its a crappy engine for performance too, if you want for go 302 (or 5.0L). they are quite a bit better due to the low cost of parts and availibility

I To Would Go Chevy Over A Ford. The Power To Weight Ratio Is Better With A 350 Sbc. And You Can Get It Bored Out To A 383. Even More Power. Or A 327 And Do A Scarb Clone!!!

Without getting into a whole Ford vs Chevy thing the Ford 302 has the same bore as a 350 Chevy but with a shorter stroke, now stroke that 302 to a 347 and the 350 wont touch the ford block until you stoke the 350 to a 383 then its a matter of which do you really want cause then there about the same. The 351 is actually a pretty beefy motor depending on which one it is Windsor or Cleveland. I say slap a Skyline twin turbo in the ZX and call it a day!

yeah I'll agree with you on that. The skyline engine would be BOSS... If I were to go ford though it would have to be the 428 cobra jet, if I could go dodge it would have to be a 440 six-pack with a custom shaker hood. That would look sooooo sexy.... drooool

The 351W is actually the same size/weight as the 302. Both are Windsor factory blocks. The Cleveland however is something totally different.

If you're going to do it, do it with Fuel Injection. Seriously.

I don't care if you go Ford, Chevy or RB, just do it right.

I almost forgot... why would you buy a 'new' engine off someone that was already broken with 0 miles on it? Wouldn't you wonder what else they didn't get right and how long it's gonna take you to find it?

Especially with a 2 barrel carb. You already need to buy a new carb and they aren't cheap. You have the stock cast iron heads and manifolds... freakin' heavy!

I would only do this if you had a dead L28 and you had to put something in it NOW.

I think you'd be better off finding a 5.0 Mustang H.O. motor in the junk yard and put some headers on it. You'd have a Ford with the front mount distributor, fuel injection and aftermarket parts galore!

You'll still have to do all the fab work to get the motor and tranny in, but you could get a 5 speed from the same donor Mustang and you'd have a pretty sweet ZX with Ford muscle... when they still had muscle...

well. It's eather find a way to get my Inline 6 goin. Or drop the 351M in it. Buy a new set of rod's and maby a set of dome top's while i am at it. My choice is eather L28E, or 351M. I want to be uniqe. When i bought my Z i was the only one. Now there popin up all over. and there all N/A L28E's. Drop a 351M with dome top's, header's, and side pipes, she would still be a boss. I talked to a shop yesterday, couple ppl said that motor should be pushin around 350-375HP and around the same with Tourqe. Even with the 2 barrel Holly.

I was there though the build. Real good freind of mine. were building up his 76 S30. That's why he wants my rail and t/b stuff. everythign in the heads are new. just the block they used the old rods. they took a chance and it did not come out to there favor. I would run the 2 Barrel untill a megasquirt and a injection conversion moves it's way into the motor bay.

We still haven't figured out if it's a Windsor or Cleveland.

If it were me, I'd tell my friend thanks for the offer, but I'd pass.

5.0 HO Mustang's are still readily available in the junk yards and you can get the manual tranny to go with it.

All you'd need then is motor mounts, tranny mount and a new drive shaft.

And being in the "boonies of mississippi" he should have plenty of time to fab all that up

Hey fubar...did you ever get your rail and spacer???

And the 351M isn't really considered a windsor or cleveland block. Though it is considered to be in the same family as the cleveland.
