Temp sensor issues

hey guys i have a 1979 280zx. when i started to get the car working there was temp guage non-working i had a mechanic replace the temp sensor now it apparently is one from a Canadian model (not exactly sure if the American one was on before) as far as i can tell everything is connected correctally but the temp guage only works like 2% of the time any thoughts? i do know there is 2 wires for the American model car i have but this temp sensor only has one wire...

the single bullet connector temp senders (that are the one for your temp gauge) are all the same, you can get one out of any L6 and itl work fine.

make sure the sender is good and your connections are free of corrosion and that the ground is good.

hmm my temp sensor is all hooked up and clean tested working... it still does not work most of the time. however recently after reconnecting everything it seems to work well when the headlights are on... is this even possible that the headlights/fuse/wiring can effect temp sensor functionality....
