timing a zxt

Ok, I did everything by the book, at idle, I can get 10 btdc. However, off idle, I get 28 degrees...hmm.

Runs okay though

Is this right or what?

Some issues with ecu plugs, I thought were clean, not...green corrosion present when pluging and unplugging the center plug, wiggle the plugs around, you get a different idle.
I'll try to clean these pins...but will probably use the plugs I clipped from an 89 turbo car a few years back.

Trailering the car to Little Rock tomorrow to have a mandrel exhaust put on with a Magnaflow muffler. Try and get the pipe bent for the NPR intercooler while I'm there, fit it up later.

The car pulls hard, the ACT clutch needs breaking in.

Getting Ford Motorsports short throw t-5 shifter, close out pricing, 139.95. Not a bad price I might add.

With the poly bushings and Tokico springs and shocks, reman rack and pinion with new inner and outer tie rod ends, she pulls to the right a bit, but steering is very tight, move the wheel any and the car responds...

gotta get tires and alignment next.

Overall I am happy with the Jim Wolf setup, Thats something I hope not to have to worry about.

The issue with the timing...what should I do next?

If your dizzy is maxed out and it's only @ 10 degrees at idle, the oil pump shaft is probably off a tooth. And the timing will advance when revving. Did you disconnect the TPS while timing it?

And the ecu plugs are notorious for corrosion (I almost went insane pinpointing that prob).

It made no difference with the tps connected or not.

The tps is from a 240sx, 60mm. throttle body. I don't know if the wiring is different than in a 280zx's throttle body. I might have the wires crossed?

I used the schematic for the 280zx when wiring it up. However, the 240sx's is clocked differently from the 280zx's.

I played around with the oil pump, I think I have it set in the correct position.

This car runs like a raped ape, but is still holding back.

The car is a 83zxt, just at 100k miles.

The 240sx TPS is the same as the 280zxt. It only has an idle switch. Did you re-calibrate it to turn on / off at the idle point?

Played around, as in removed it & checked the alignment? Did you set it while cyl #1 was at TDC?

The top end at the dizzy should be clocked like this:

Also, are you using a timing gun w/ manual advance adjustments (maybe a dial on the back)?

I just got in

and read all the posts. thanks,

I timed it just like in the picture, at 11:25. Tdc, timing mark on 0.
My timing light is inductive, no bells no whistles cheap no frills.

I have not yet looked into recalibrating the tps.

I will look into it asap, potential problems have happened....I'll post later.

thanks,
kenny.

If the oil pump is off a tooth at all doesn't it make it pretty much impossible to get proper timing or can your oil pump be off and you can still set it to the proper ignition timing?

Also set it with the throttle position sensor connected. Make sure the TPS is adjusted properly so the ECU knows it's idling.

timing fixed

Everything was done exactly as prescribed.

I had dizzy rotor on #1 centered. That was the problem.

I placed the dizzy rotor as shown in the fsm, which placed the rotor at slightly past #1.

It worked, car fired right up, drove it last nite. Timed it this morning.

20 degrees btdc, according to Ben Pila Jr. at Jim Wolf.

Car screams. bad azzmofo.
