What is wrong with my radio?

What is wrong with my radio?

My lighted dial on my 83 stock radio will not stay lit. It goes off and if you cut off the button and back on and hold button in hard, the green digits on the radio will work. They may work for a couple of days or for 30 seconds and then not work at all. It loses power somewhere, because sometimes it will lose the preset stations. Recently, the talking lady quit, at the same time i lost my front speakers. Now on the **** opposite the lighter, on WIDE setting both rear speakers work, on middle setting, only the left one works, on STEREO setting, both rear speakers work. I also found i have to turn my radio up almost all the way to get any good volume. I think these cars have an amplifier in the dash or under the passenger seat. Could this have gone out? If so, I have a parts car that may have one that works.
If there is an amplifier, where is it located and could it have cut out my front speakers and talking lady only? I know the talking lady comes through the front speaker. Any help would be apprecitated.

i don't think that the amp would cause inconsitent problems like that. it just puts power in. it sounds to me like you need a new head unit

But, cant the amplifier cause the volume to not work right? I can live with the rest of the issues if the volume was loud enough.

i dont think there is a post head unit amp stock in these cars. they got a few little *** speakers in the dash that go bad, sound like the radio just is old so it not lighting up **** happens. as for the speakers, maybe you blew them, maybe they shorted, only way your going to know is if you get in there and track or just replace all the wires, you can also try a volt meter and see if there are any breaks in the wires. this definatly isnt a "common" problem with some solution, this is a get your hands dirty and test stuff kinda problem. have fun!
