what's the switch for?!
Could somebody please tell me what the switch to the right of the ashtray was originally setup for? I just acquired a '79 280ZX a couple months ago and the guy put in a different switch to turn his amp on and off (which was removed before i bought the car). So what was the switch originally used for? Thanks in advance...

You got two answers there. That spot was sometimes a joystick to adjust which speakers got power, and other times it was a 'wide stereo' on/off switch. On some 280zx's it was a little rubber plug that had nothing there but a circle. Its based on what year/kind of radio came in the car.
I took mine out and put in a toggle switch to turn the light-up Z on my hood on and off.

I made it. I used a Z31 hood emblem. I removed the center circle out of the rear. The Z is white painted on there, so I scratched the white part out from the back side. I filled the circle that I removed with smoked plexiglass. I stuck two dash light bulbs behind there and glued them in place. Should have used LED lights so they would last longer. Mine have not burnt out yet, but I don't turn the Z light on very much. I had to make a spacer to space the emblem off the hood a bit to fit the dash lights. It doesn't look too bad, and nobody really notices the spacer.
The wires run through the two gauge mounting holes in the hood.
