why did they use an AFM?

So how do i tune my afm to make my car run a bit leaner? I want to make it run leaner till i get my turbo cause i have the turbo injectors so i would like to tune the afm till i get the turbo stuff.

a link to a link, i dont understand one other thing about the AFM....the freakin connector faces DOWN!

and the fact that some have temp sensors and adjustment screws while other dont have them or only have one or the other, thats funky.
