Why do you like your 280ZX ??
Hey People,
I am not much of a ZX guy . I have driven them and
and think some look great , but other then that I don't
know much about them. I usually call them a couch on wheels ,
but I know they were designed to be more of a touring sedan.
Let us know why you like your ZX . This will give me some insight
into your passion for your car.
Thanks,
Mike

I have a 81 zxt I like the couch extras. i do not like the bumpers. the turbo is fun with extra boost.it's fun to drive. I do not think the nonturbos would be as fun.I think the 72z i have is more nimble. but the t tops / ac / cruse / power windows are OK . it is still a Z ( still looks like the older z's) I love my Z cars!

I like the ZX cause it has some creature comforts that can make long drives more tolerable. The a/c is the main thing. The turbo is great too like what GOZFAST was saying. Even for being a touring car, my ZX feels alright speedwise. It still beats a bunch of so called sports cars that are being produced. The looks are similar to the original Z, and I think ZX's can look good when modded, not to mention they have a better CD than the original Z's.

The one I have is from a salvage. I bought it from a guy who only worked on z's and zx's, but no 300zx's. My wife drove it for a long time, until she needed a suv for work. Then it sat........for three years. It's a fairly easy car to work on. Although it won't run for more than 10 mintues right now (I could kick myself for letting it sit) as soon as I replace the fuel pump, it's back on the road. As for my wife's suv...gone. She's now driving an '84ZXT AE. I have a Nissan SEV6 king cab 4x4 that I drive now......but the 280ZX will be my car of choice. Lots of fun and when I was driving it to work about a year ago, it still got looks on the road.

I have 2 Zs. I like my 81ZX for the comfort. Power everything is really nice. You give up a lot in power and performance. But for a daily driver or a long distance haul she is great. My 78Z is strictly for road racing. She has ground effects stiffer springs and mods on the motor. I installed some Miata seats that helped with the comfort alot. I notice the difference immediatly when I go from one Z to the other power and performance. If I am in a rush to be somewhere I take the Z. If I am just getting there i.e. work I take the ZX.
I guess it boils down to what you want to do with your Z. Luckily for me I have the best of both worlds.

That is an interesting question!! The main reason to own any car is driveability. It can look cool, but if it doesn't drive good you wan't use it. For example, I previously built a 1930 Model A pickup street rod. It was a cool car to look at -- but almost worthless to drive anywhere except in a parade. When I did a Z, I intended to fix that problem. I owned a 84 300 ZX, but it was a little far to go to turn it into a sports car. I wanted something more like a 240, but MUCH more comfortable and driveable. I had purchased a 1980 280ZX new for my wife and the car was still in my family. It had the looks I wanted and although I didn't consider it a "true" sports car -- it was close enough to try to get there by making modifications -- so I did the following:
1. I thought the suspension was way too soft -- Tokico and Eibach fixed that
2, I hated the crash bumpers -- So I bought a MSA aero kit and cut off and tossed everything except the fiberglass bumpers.
3. The car was way too heavy to handle good. So I got rid of every scrap of metal that didn't do something. I then changed things like the steel crash shocks to aluminum mounts, etc, etc. So far I have been able to reduce the empty weight over 300#
4. I thought the car had good looking lines but had way too much chrome -- I removed ALL trim, badging, etc I could. Anything I couldn't remove, I painted.
5. The interior needed to be simpler -- ripped out the console and redid a number aof plastic parts in stainless steel
6. Not enough power. I am working on this now.
So after a lot of my time and money, I now have a car that looks pretty good, handles REALLY good, and is VERY comfortable on long trips. Now what else could you ask of ANY car?
I just enjoy driving the car around town AND taking it on long trips.
Guess I will have make the drive from TX to NH for the next Z nats.

Re: Why do you like your 280ZX ??
I saw the first Z when I was in 7th grade...I thought it was a Jaguar, because of the inline 6...and the long hood made it look like a speed demon...so it's been my favorite car since I can remember, once I got to drive one...it was love at 1st sight, especially when I raced against a semi-automatic 1969 mustang boss...I beat it so bad....also, the T-tops, makes it one of the best looking cars on the road...and it takes mods very well as you can see in my profile.
