Worth the time/money?
Hey Z Folks,
Got the opportunity to buy another Z, this ones a 73 240z. original L24 with aftermarket holley 4 barrel and corresponding intake mani, dual point dist, 68k on body and motor. Has been under a garage/shelter for last 10 years, sitting. Paint is presumably original but looks good except for normal oxidation on hood/top. Owner says that there is a bent/broken tie rod and the front frame rail is bent from a previous owner driving it into a curb. Also says there is a decent amount of rust in the floorpans, etc.
$400. I will have the time but how much money am I going to sink into this sucker to get it to the point where I can sell it and make money off of it or is this an unrealistic goal
Thanks

any idea what i could get out of parting it out? the main objective of this was to have something to tinker with but i dont want to lose money on it

How's the interior?
At $400 you probably aren't going to loose money on it.
If the hood is straight that'll fetch $50 to $100. If the fenders are straight they'll bring in the same, so you'll get back at LEAST $150 up to possibly $300 on just the easily removable body panels. Some people go for that Holley 390 setup, but I'm not a fan, but I'm sure you can get at least a couple hundred for that whole setup alone.
[rant=on]It was invented for US mechanics who only know Holley's and who couldn't figure out how to sync the SU's and owner's who listened to those mechanics that said the SU's were crap because they didn't know how to tune them...[/rant=off]
If the interior is in decent shape, the interior pieces can be sold for $10 to $15 each and you can make another $100 off that. The seats are usually not re-salable unless someone's doing a "period correct" restoration. Good dash and console can be worth good money if they're uncracked.
This is all premised on whether or not you want to tinker with it or part it out. Tie rod's are cheap and as long as the front frame rail isn't bent so bad the wheels can't be aligned properly it can easily be a driver.
