Z driveshaft

Hiya folks...I have a question concerning my 81 zxt. Is it true that the u joints on the driveshaft cannot be replaced? Or is it just the Z models?
If so..what about the ujoints on the half shafts? And does anyone make
ceramic brake pads (front and rear) for my car? Thanks in advance...cuz I
intend to suck up a lot of info in here.

true, the u-joints are made not to ever be replaced. They seldom go bad on the driveshaft.

Also, on your half shafts, don't you have CV joints? I was thinking the turbo models did.

they sell the ujoints for the cv's/half shafts. so i imagine there replaceable. but the process in the FSM looks to be a nightmare.

the driveshaft ones can only be replaced at a driveline shop, they need to do some machining work/pressing. they do seldom wear out, but its near 30 years old. when they put new ones in, they are greasable and can be changed. ive had one seize up, and had others replaced for a 350 swap/ custom shaft

its probably easier to replace the entire CV shaft about 100 bucks a piece.

When working with the 3n71b auto driveshaft, best to have it done by a company rather than try to find one or you could end up with the other two sizes of yokes rather than the one you need.

The 3n71b 280zx turbo uses a larger diameter output shaft but retains the same outside diameter of the yoke while the n/a driveshaft yoke has a smaller diameter output shaft on the tranny......both yokes are 35mm outside diameter.

Then there are automatics with both the large output shaft but with a larger outside diameter than the others........38mm outside diameter.

280zx 2+2 driveshaft length

Help

Question for Shady280," on 280zx driveshafts"

Currently in process of replacing driveshaft...
What came out of my Z appears to be a
Factory Datsun shaft it measures 37 1/4 inch's
overall from outside of u-joint to Trans Coupling.

Is there a Max Length which is useable?
What reference points do you use to determine
driveshaft length?

It seem that Z has multiple issues:
1) Exhaust Manifold gasket shot, two broken studs
one on the front and the rear one
2) Driveshaft u-joints have flat spots and binds
3) Calipers don't relax after brake pedal is released,
may be the proportional valve (Napa and The Z
Store don't have one available, perhaps a member
of ZDriver has one not in use and in clean shape)
Or the master cylinder has a problem, Napa has
master
