86' Z31 - Water Pump Failure...Need help..
My water pump recently went out on my 86 300ZX n/a. I called around a few places and they all wanted around $600-$700 to fix it, but they all insisted that I get the timing belt or something replaced too. I am wondering why do that too if it isn't broken? I ordered a water pump and plan on doing it myself, but I think I need some help from you expert Z Owners. What Timing parts do I need to order? Can somebody give me a step by step walkthrough on how to replace these things? I'd appreciate any help I could get! Thanks. -Dave
PS I would take it in to have all that fixed, but I owe $2,200 to college by next August.

Welcome to ZDriver!
Replacing everything while in there that deep is common practice everywhere. It's recommended... but no one is holding a gun to your head.
You can download the FSM here: XenonZ31 Reference

Most of that $600-$700 is labor just to get to the water pump. It makes sense to replace critical but inexpensive parts like the timing belt/tensioner while the front of the engine is exposed so you don't have to pay that labor charge again when you have to replace them or worse when the belt breaks. This would be a good time to replace the thermostat, cam and front crank seals also.

get the kit from Courtesy Nissan. I spent a lot of time sourcing parts and only wound up saving maybe 50 bucks over their cost for the kit. Unless you know the timing belt was recently done then might as well do it. You have to take all the tin off to get at the water pump and you are then looking at the timing belt right there before your eyes. As you take off the 12 -14 tiny bolts to get the tin off be sure you note where they go. Some are a different length I remember. Also since you are there throw in another 30 bucks and replace the chts. Very easy to get at the fpr if you have doubts about that. There is a short piece of rad hose like behind the fpr. be sure you get that on before starting to put things back together. not fun when all the tin is on. look to see if your radiator is in good shape. It all depends on if you like to gamble. there is nothing mysterious about getting the tin off it is just tedious and you can get at everything.
