86 Z31N/A questions
hey all, i just bought the car and i love it, i have only 2 major problems, number one is that it has a starting problem, it will start sometimes but a lot of the time it will not, it has power to everything (lights, stereo, etc) but the starter doesnt even click, no noises at all, i dont think its a loose contact or anything like that what i was thinking is it might be a fault in the stock security system, i was reading my haynes manual and it said that the security system can do that. If so i want to get rid of the stock security system anyways for an aftermarket one, how do i go about removing this system, can i just take all the fuses out?, and my last question could be a few things, i get horrible gas mileage in my car, I believe it has around a 60L tank right? and i only get around 200km per tank .I was readin some posts and i was thinkin it might be my air-flow sensor, and maybe the timing could be off, if so how do i tell if my timing is off and will it be noticeable increase in gas mileage if i replace my sensor and that is the problem? sorry about the many questions but any help would be awesome, thanks!
p.s. One thing i forgot to say is that when the car wont start i can still roll start it, so i am thinking it might even be my solenoid or something like that, sometimes it will start to turn over then just stop and then i'll have to rollstart it

For the starting problem. double check the battery with a HAND HELD voltmeter. I've seen cars where the battery reads 12V on the dash, and the lights and stereo and everything work and come on, but the hand held meter only reads 10.5V. And this is NOT enough to engage the starter.
To get rid of the alarm, simply unplug it. It's under the passenger (unless you drive on the right side of the car) seat. There are two boxes right next to each other on the same plate. Disconnect both.
How many miles per gallon (km/L) are you getting? EVERY z31 ever made came with a 19 gallon (however many liters that is) gas tank. And a properly tuned one will get about 24mpg easily. The z31 is renowned for having bad fuel level sending unit that will read full when it's full but read empty when it is really still about 3/4 full. How many liters are you putting in when it reads empty?
A bad AFM will cause your car to either not run at all, or to not run over about 2200 rpms. It should not cause such a bad mileage.

cool, thx for the help,i'l keep track of my mileage in the next few days and see what happens, is the sending unit fairly cheap and/pr easy to replace, does it involve dropping the gas tank?and usually when i "fill" the tank i put about 24-25Liters in, hmmm, interesting, it hought they had bigger tanks then that

First, there is a signal wire on the starter. Is it getting 12V?
If so, take the starter out and have a parts store test it. They should do it for free. If the signal wire is not getting 12V, you probably have a dead ignition switch. Or there's a fuse or a relay that's bad.

check you clutch swich.. it allows the starter to engage after you push in the clutch... since you are getting power and the starter inst even "clicking" when you turn the key that means you have a broken circuit between the ignition switch and the starter... also check your starter relay.. it is in one of the relay boxes under your hood... good luck!

84-86 don't have the clutch switch. wasn't required until 87. so, you can start the car with it in gear and no clutch in.
