87 fog light changing and wiring problem
How do you remove the fog light lenses and casings from 87-89 ZX's? I need to replace the lenses and bulbs, but I can't find any website or manual that shows me how to remove them. Also, I was woking on my headlight wiring problem and found out some more info on it. My lowbeam wiring (At least thats what I believe is the lowbeam wiring) has a connection with the ground wire, but the high beam wiring does not - This is the same on both lights. I have to splice a wire from my lowbeam wire to the parking lights power wire so they get juice. Is it possible if the high beam wiring is out, the headlights will not work at all when wired normally? I want to order the Factory Service manual from Courtesey Nissan, does anybody know if it shows this wiring in detail?
Thanks,
Robert

First, the high and low beams use the same ground. You don't have to do anything there.
Second, read the FAQs on http://z31.com to find out what is going on with the head lights. You don't have to rewire anything.
Third. To replace the bulbs, you get under the car and reach behind the fog lights and pull out the bulbs.
Fourth. To remove the lens, you should be able to find the screws that hold it in place when you are under the car looking at them.

I don't think its the ground on the highbeams, I think there may be a break in the wiring, but it would be strange if both highbeams had a break in them. Now the screws that hold the foglight lenses in, I saw about 11 screws on one side. I am going to get some pics and see if I can find out anything, but thanks.

Re: 87 fog light changing and wiring problem
exactly my point. Remove any of the wiring you did to the headlights. The groud is not the problem High and low beams use the same ground.
The problem isn't any of the wiring. It's the headlight switch. Go read the FAQs on http://z31.com for how to fix.
I don't have an 87-89 to look at, so I have no idea how the lenses come off the fog lights.

Re: 87 fog light changing and wiring problem
I had the same problem. There are 4 10mm nuts that hold up the light fixture on each light( I had them appart 50 times). there are a bunch little screws but all they do is move the light in a different direction. If your lens is cracked they are $80 a piece. 55w H3 bulb is $3. the connector that the bulb goes fits into is $35(the plastic thing that you unplug when you take off the fixture). If you are popping fuses (15A), shrink wrap all of the connections in the plastic thing. Mine work now and I disconnected the auto pop up on the head lights. It looks great and people have no idea what kind of car it is. The looks on their faces was worth all the time I put into it. Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks. The problem that I have is with my wiring. I need to have a professional fix my wiring problem, but thanks for the info on changing the running lights. Both lenses are cracked, want new ones even though they don't work - yet.

Re: 87 fog light changing and wiring problem
I am 98% sure if it is the wiring. What leads me to believe the wiring is the problem is that neither of my highbeams get juice. Even when I run the diode test to check for continuaty (Will go off even if the lights are not switched on - at least on my low beams it does), I get nothing. Now a couple of times the wiring for my lowbeams came loose when I was driving. I pulled over and noticed that my right headlight was out, but my bottom left running light was working. Also one time I disconnected my left headlamp, and my right running light came on. All of these times this happened my running light switch was never turned on. I am going to change the lenses and bulbs over the next few days and test it out, hopefully thats it. However there is something still wrong with my headlight wiring, its very difficult to explain, it has taken me many weeks to add it all up. Maybe next time I will include some pics to help explain my delima. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Re: 87 fog light changing and wiring problem
Sounds to me like you are chasing ghosts. Unless someone screwed around with the original wires, there shouldn't be a problem with the wiring. Most of the time (90%+) people have problems with their lights, it's because the headlight switch is bad.
Why not just spend the $65 or whatever it is, take it to the local Nissan dealer, and let them diagnose it. Then, if it's the switch, they can replace it and charge the diagnosis time to the time it takes them to replace the switch. Adding in the cost of the switch naturally.
It really sounds like you don't know what you are looking for on the wiring, that's why I say it.

Your right, I really don't know what I am looking for on the wiring. My Haynes manual is kind of wierd on the wiring diagram, only shows 84 - 86, and its a hassle to trace for me. First I am going to replace my lenses and bulbs, see what that does. If it doesn't work, oh well, at least my car will look nicer and when they do work, that would be better. I will let you all know what happens after they are replaced, hopefully thats it, but my luck is very bad.
