Cam Sprockets

Cam Sprockets
I'm getting ready to do a timing belt change, is it necessary or important to change the Cam Sprockets also ? That's one thing I don't have at the moment. I was also reading to change out the tensioner stud when replacing the tensioner, I have a new tensioner and spring, just no stud, so I'd need to get one of those also. I do have all new seals, cams and crank I believe, which would require removing the sprockets, so is it a deal breaker, or can they be reused ? My car has 88,000 mile atm.

Round and square teeth
Looks like the VG30 changed to round teeth on the cam sprockets in 94, most VG33's have round teeth, like a 96 pathfinder. The belts changed also, to match the tooth profile on the sprockets (makes sense), so Ill probably change to the round toothed sprockets in another 60K and then be good for 100k per belt after that. I'm guessing the square teeth are harder on the belt and wear them down faster. Good tip to know I found this adjustable set that comes in round or square teeth, pretty cool. I wonder what the expense would be to have a part designed and milled on a CNC machine, if that would be a doable project, I'm enrolled to start CNC school next semester, could be a class project possibly modify an existing part.... just dreamin

With what you could make for a VG, you would make a crank pulley so you could get a measly 40k extra miles out of a $60 timing belt?

I haven't been able to confirm that the crank snout diameter did change between the A/B and W versions of the motor, where did you source that reference, I was posting on Z31 performance, and I was told it did not change, does anyone have practical experience with this mod, there seems to be a lot of bad information out there, would be nice to get a definite yes or no from someone who has done it.

I just did the belt on my 86T. spent lots of time on the internet trying to get cheapest parts. After all was said and done. Just go to courtesy nissan and buy the kit. save a lot of time and got what you need.
You do need those tin pieces that look useless in the picture but to get to the front end crank seal replacement you destroy those. one nice piece of info that was hard to dig up is you need to put a 10KG (22 lbs) weight on the belt and measure deflection to get correct tension (1" I seem to remember). BE sure you replace that little piece of rad hose that is stuck back in there before you commence the belt install. If you want to replace fpr that would be the time to do it.
