Digital Dash Problems
Yesterday I bought an 84 300ZX and I am expierencing an intermitent problem with the speedometer not indicating the speed. Sometimes it will work and others time it will just register zero "00". And this in turn seems to have an effect on the Tripmeter A, Tripmeter B, and the Average Speedometer becuase they are all registering zero's.
Another problem that Im having is the fuel gauge doesnt even light up on the digital dash. The distance to empty seems to work but I have noticed it to go out sometimes. I ran the diagnostics test and the fuel gauge still doesnt work but the distance to empty lights up.
And lastly the cruise control doesnt seem to work either. The cruise control pilot light on the dash lights up when you toggle the switch on but the controls dont seem to function.
Any suggestions or "how-to's" on repairing these problems please let me know. It will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Mike

Re: Digital Dash Problems
Well i visited the site that you mentioned in your reply and from what I read the power supply is the culprit in most cases. I examined the power supply and could not find where any of the pins were damaged or not making contact so Im led to believe that the digital panel may leds may need replacing. But first I am going to find a junked 300ZX if Im able too and try swapping out power supplies

you can resolder the back of the circuitboard where the pins are connected to it. often the cracks in the solder are not visible unless u use a strong magnifying glass. I repair/resell these often and they're pretty simple to fix. I would guess that's the problem wiht the speedo and tripmeter problems. as for the fuel gauge it could be either the power supply or the amplifier on the circuitboard of the digital dash unit. I've only had limited success at repair of these and due to the time required to repair them, I've found it more economical to get one from the local junkyard.
for the cruise control - make sure the plastic buttons are in place on the brake and clutch pedal (only on the brake if yours is an automatic). Often these break and fall out. You can either order a new plastic button, or replace it with a small nut/bolt. if you do the nut/bolt then you should adjust the switch to allow for the extra thickness of the nut/bolt. also check the vacuum line going to the cruise control actuator located on the pass side strut tower.
