Glass on gauges (please help me)
Recently I purchased my baby. 87 NA coupe. Only for $1800, so I'm very happy. Although I don't have a lot of work to do on her, to get her to where I want her, I do. Here's one I haven't quite figured out other than just replacing them.
The two gaughes in the middle of my dash. Mind you she's got the electric dash which works pretty good. But the two gauges' lense cover are scratched and cloudy. Here's the kick... On the inside. I haven't taken it apart yet (in fear of messing with my luck that I got a digital dash that works. lol) But are those glasses one peace with the gauge or can I have them replaced?
And being that I'm talking about them... I know at like 2000 RPM the oil gauge should be in the safe operating level. If the meter is low, then I should check my oil. But sometimes I think that meter does what the H**L it wants to. I have 10-30 in her. And I check the oil level daily and it doesn't seem to be leaking. Is this a sign that I'm gonna be spending another 2k for a motor? lol Please... Someone give me the 411.

Not sure about the gauges, but your oil pressure plug attached to the block maybe not working properly. I have the same issue with my Z. It can be replaced, but you can live without it. If your not leaking an oil, your fine.

Re: Oil Pressure
You could through the trouble to manually check the oil pressure, but it's more cost6 effective to put a new Oil Pressure Sending Unit on. They're cheap (under $30) and you will then know if there is a problem (Problem same reading, higher reading old OPS unit). If your in the South I'd run 10w40 or even 20w50 for summer use. Remember to ONLY use a Nissan oil filter as they are the only ones built with the proper oil by-pass valve. That valve does two things, holds oil in the filter when you turn off - and opens up to by-pass the filter when running down the highway. Lots of people are suprised to find out the filter does little filtering except near idle! Good luck.

Re: Oil Pressure
Oh REALLY! i just changed the oil and put an STP filter on there. Guess I need to run to the nissan house.... lol
You think 20w 50? I can't remember what I put in my last Z. But I know that it stayed happy (except for the fact that she leak and burned oil.. haha.) Speaking of oil, what are your views on a synth oil? I've heard too many contering stories. (great..not great... helps seals... ruin seals... lol)

Re: Oil Pressure
Just an opinion of a Texan - oil is oil.
Just change it at VERY specific intervals (3500 miles or so) and a filter every other oil change. Our VG30E(T) in our Z's is a fairly old engine design but pretty bullet proof and has 'room' in the bearing tolerances for various viscocity of oils. The newer engines these days are much higher in tolerance and need 5w30 to get the mileage the manuf. are claiming. Remember oil doesn't usually wear out (lose viscosity) , it just gets dirty. Older the engine, the more dirt it gets from ring blow-by. Synthetics are good, so are the hybrids and petroleum based oils, just find something your engine agrees with and stick with it. I use Castrol 20w50 in all but the coldest months.

Re: Oil Pressure
im pretty sure the lenses can be replaced. they are easy to get to if you want to find out. just take out the center of the dash( the part that holds the stereo and the a/c controls) and move it out of the way. then remove the bolts to the guages( i believe 2) and they come out at the same time. simple. if you do this, post here so the rest of us will know, for i have a digi dash as well and am curious.

Re: Oil Pressure
Exactly as he said. Remove radio and AC mount then look up. 2 screws and it pulls down. Disconnect it and you're done.
And the clear plastic is seperate pieces.

One gets the feeling that you have at one point or another sacrificed every part on your z to the dismantling god AZ_
It is easy to remove. Only took a few minutes on my first Z..

Re: Oil Pressure
I take lots of pictures, and have my entire interior out of my car before. That just happened to be in a box of parts I had sitting around for later use. Pulled it out this morning looking for something else.

Just boxes of spair parts laying around?! I wish! You wouldn't happen to have spare window switches you would be willing to part with would you? My 87t has the top silver (you know the cheap plastic part)plates missing, as well as one of the buttons.

Re: Glass on gauges (please help me)
you may want to try plastic polish. 3M makes it - part no. 051131 but big number on the bottle is 39010 (dunno why it has 2 numbers....). It's pretty good - i've used it to shine up taillights, and even a CD which was really scratched up. I found it at a paint shop (a PPG store) but you may be able to find it at other places which carry a decent variety of detailing products.

Re: Oil Pressure
Parts laying around.. Last time I had parts laying around it was because the car was wrecked and broke... haha... I need a tail light (mine has cracks in it. Like inside of it, but not all the way through), Glass covers for my gauges (that this thread started with..), door pannels, and that's the short short list.. hahah.
