Headlamps won't shutoff?
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and relatively new to z31's. I happened to have an '84 land in my lap due to all the madness going on around and got it running!
It's a 5-speed non-turbo with around 129k miles on the odo. and has been running smooth for the past two months. A few days ago however, the headlights started to give me issues.
While driving I noticed that my headlights were popped up and on. I saw that my headlight stock was in the off position and the headlight button wasn't depressed, but the orange indicator light was on.
When pressing the headlight button on the dash, the left side would go down and the right would make an attempt but lift back up. The left would pop up about a second later.
No matter how much I turned on and off the headlight stock in any position, the lamps would not turn off. Turning off the car had no effect on the headlights.
After having to unplug the battery to keep the car from dying on me, I turned it on the next day and was surprised to see the headlights functioning completely normally and the lights off. However, that lasted about 5 minutes before the same issue arose.
Taking the car around LA for the day disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, I noticed the problem would repeat anywhere from 2 minutes to 15 minutes after driving. Taking a peak underneath the hood I noticed that the cylindrical looking component that has a
**** with an arrow on it underneath a rubber boot behind the headlight would click rhythmically to engage. The **** would spin in a timely fashion while the headlight was popped up.
Prior to this, more often than not; the high beams would engage when using the turn signal. This was remedied by slightly pushing back on the stock towards the dash and the lights would go back down.
Aside from that there isn't any other issues I've had with the headlights.
I'm wondering if there's a way to diagnose the issue before disassembling the steering wheel to sand the contact points on the headlight switch to save some time, especially if that's not the issue.
I searched for the issue online and have only come across one discussion that resembled my issue, but was unresolved:

Hopefully one of you all knows something or two about this
Thanks!
