I need a replacement part (no longer made?) to help pass smog.
Hi guys.
I need some help.
I have a 1988 Nissan 300ZX GS2+2 (non-turbo) that recently failed smog. The
car has less than 80,000 original miles on it. The reason it failed is
because the smog guy (STAR station; test only) says the "intake air boot" is
cracked.
So I check with the Nissan dealership. His computer inventory says they
don't have it, and neither does other dealerships. Apparently, it isn't
made anymore.
AutoZone or Napa Auto don't have it either. I doubt O'Reilly would have
different results.
I check w/ nearby auto salvagers and dismantlers and they don't have it
(used).
I try my local Pick 'N Pull (in person) but someone has beaten me to the 2
cars that could have had it. That was $2 (entry fee) wasted.
I've also tried searching for it online with eBay, Craigslist, and Amazon.
So I suspect that the reason I am having trouble finding it (online) is
because perhaps my smog guy didn't really know what it is called.
Can you please take a look at my pictures and tell me what that part is
called? It's a small rubber tube (slightly flexible) that is wrapped a bit
w/ duct tape. The tube measures 2-3/4" long and has a diameter of about 3-
1/8" diameter.
Either way, I could also use some ideas of how you might go about finding a
part (new or used) that is no longer made anymore. Maybe you know of any
websites that might have it?
As it is now, I will have to file for Non-Operational status w/ the DMV as
my registration is due for tomorrow. I would hate to have to permanently
retire this car due to me being unable to get a small rubber part. I
wouldn't be able to fetch much via private party sale if they can't even
test drive it and it can't pass smog.
BTW, a co-worker of mine recommends that I try to "seal" the crack w/ some
kind of sealant instead of trying to find a new part. Do you think the smog
guy (or any of them) will find that copasetic?

It's just a generic 3" coupler... since it isn't boosted, a $3 sewer coupler from Home Depot or Lowe's would work perfectly. There are also many Nissan's that use the same generic boot... If you are dead set on getting a stock part, look for some VG30E Maximas, or SR20 Sentras in the junk yards. Most auto parts store "cold air intake" kits come with those boots too (unfortunately they are mostly ricer red or blue).
I know CA smog techs are *****, but I doubt they would be able to tell the difference between a sewer coupler and stock boot. Just make sure any labels are face down, underneath...
