New project

I'm starting a new project this year. I've had many many Z31's and have only kept the 87-89 models as my personal cars. I've bought and sold several 84-86 turbo models but never considered keep them as the late (kouki) style has always been my favorite. I picked up a 86 turbo GLL (zenki) 5 speed in non running condition for $500. It has high miles (257K) but was well cared for until the last owner. I have a stack of dealership repair and performance shop receipts. The body is in pretty good condition with only a few spots of minor rust.(under tool kit, spare tire well) the interior is a little rough also. I have all the interior stuff to restore it to good condition. It was a one owner car until it was sold to a woman about 8 years ago who neglected it after it overheated. It then sat for seven years with what I think might be water in the cylinders from a blown head gasket from driving it while hot. It is now frozen up and will not turn over. I picked up a low mile (95K) complete 86 turbo motor with new timing belt and related parts, and a low mile 88 turbo 30A 5 speed transmission. I'm also going to get an LSD as soon as I find one for a decent price. I have a complete 87 front and rear suspension for wider stance, poly bushing kit, Powertrix 8k/6k coilovers, Stance adjustable tension rods, 88 turbo front hubs, Z32 front brake calipers with SS brake lines, electric cooling fan, new boost oil pressure gauges, and lots more stuff as time and money allow.

Now for some pictures.

This is the low mile donor motor from a red 86 turbo track project. It has a new timing belt, tensioner, water pump, t-stat, new cam and crank seals, pan and valve cover gaskets.

Great project! (Was it by any chance owned by a blonde in Marysville?) WA state seems to have a bunch of neglected Z31 turbos floating around. Prices way lower than in the East.

Keep us informed as your work progresses. Will be a great Z when you're done. But that will be a while.

Owned by a woman in Puyallup, WA. The red 88 turbo you see poking out of the garage without the bumper cover on it was owned by a young woman from Marysville.

That will be an awesome car. I would also like to see a build thread as time allows.

I thought turbos had a different hood. Is that not the case?

The hood scoop for the turbo model was eliminated with the 86 model year. Outwardly, the wheels are the biggest give away that this is a turbo car (plus the word "Turbo" on the side).

only 84-85 had a scoop on the hood for cooling the turbo.

1984 has a air cooled turbo, 85 started the water cooled turbo but the scoop was kept. 86 the scoop was left off as it was no longer needed due the water cooling on the turbo.
