New Z31 owner here. 1987 2+2 .
I just obtained a new to me 1987 300ZX 2+2 N/A . It is in pretty decent shape and is red with T-tops and dark gray leather interior . (I'll get pictures up soon) . It runs good , but there are some quirks .
I'm located in Northern california (Lodi/Stockton)
It has the full digital package (digital is out) it needs a new alternator (already purchased) and the worst part it is automatic. I prefer manual trans.
I purchased it for the price of $300 from my friend . I thought it was a good deal, but I'll see what I got myself into soon.
I also own a 1987 Honda CRX si in red with 95K original miles garage queen.
You probably will see me in the WTB section a lot.
137,000, no rust , california car . overall ext 9/10 interior 8.5 /10

Nice. Exterior looks good. If the interior is as good as you claim and there are no major rust issues underneath, IMO, $300 for a drivable Z31 is a good buy. Correcting the digital dash will be the biggest problem, but northern CA should have a reasonable supply of donor cars. Also, check 300zx Parts For You webpage for a used replacement dash. Steve Berman (in San Bernadino) is a great resource to contact as well. A forum user named ZDON had a FS5W71C manual transmission for sale. He's somewhere in northern CA and may be close to you.
Ask your friend when the timing belt was last replaced. If he cannot remember or thinks it has been awhile, I would get that swapped out as soon as possible.
Good luck with your new ride.

I put the new alternator in and realized the valve cover gaskets need to be changed. They are leaking oil .
My question is ; For the digital dash "test" is it only if it is working? I tried the "hold the 2 buttons in " and it did not cycle through the test. If the power supply is bad will it even do the cycle test?
I think that is the only issue now , besides I wish the stereo was the stock unit.
I will replace all fluids (radiatior, oil, rearend, transmission), do a tune-up, replace the timing belt and all preventative maintenance measures .
It has performance lowering springs and exhaust already. I'm not a fan of automatics with exhaust.

check around about the problem with the power supply for the digi dash. I think maybe az bum has something. the solder connections to the circuit board get bollixed up somehow and you need to resolder. that often corrects the issue.
