Oil Pressure
I've got a strange problem with my Z . the oil pressure is allways lower than its supposed to be; eventualy it will go to zero. Ihave allready replaced the oil pump and the oil pressure sensor but there has been no change. after removing the right side valve cover gasket I noticed a the oil to contain some sludge I'm now guessing that maybe the oil pan and oil pick up tube my be sludged up and am about to go through all that work to find out.
I don't see any major leakage only minor leakage (which i would expect for a engine with 160k miles) around the both valve covers (which i suspect that replacing the gaskets will fix that issue) and around the oil filter area (which could be from the last oil change) the engine doesnt burn any oil and i do have pretty decent acelleration and power. another clue is that eventually after and hour or so of driving the engine will begin to overheat this overheating tells me that there might not be enough oil moving around the engine and with that metals in the engine are begining to create to much friction possibly causing the overheating .
After reading this book can anyone think of anything else that could cause this oil pressure problem . the engine runs great and idont want to damage it any more than i probubly already have.

Re: Oil Pressure
oil pressure senders on these cars are terribly innacurate. A new one may help some, but you still won't really be able to trust it. The best option is to get an aftermarket guage.
Also remember that oil pressure isn't really most important in an engine...it's flow that you have to get. Pressure is just the way it uses to distribute oil to all areas needed.
So in short, forget about the pressure on your guage and just make sure you have oil in it.

My car has the same over heating problem. After a day of commute to work it goes through like a quart of radiator fluid. I thought that it could just be the transmission fluid needing changed, due to the system somehow being linked to the radiator, I don't know for sure. Anyways, does anyone know how to test to see if my problem has to do with the engine not getting oil where it needs it? I have noticed that for the first 10 minutes of driving the oil pressure stays all the way at the bottom marker on my digital dash. Sometimes however it reads right under the middle marker, maybe my oil pump going out? Any advice?

Engloid is right..the oem gauges are not the best..I always had that problem with my 86z. Digital dash, the oil pressure would read 0 until the car warmed up. Then it would hover in the lower quarter(it has been awhile since I had that car so I don't remember the actual reading on the gauge) of the gauge. I replaced the sending unit, the oil pump, had the engine blitzed clean...nothing seemed to matter. I finally put an aftermarket gauge in and it read right where it was supposed to. Go figure.
